Want half a million songs?

About the only drawbacks I can think of are the time to load it, and playlist management.

That technology should eventually trickle down to computers. Huge, fast drives that don't wear out and consume very little power. Again, what's not to like?

Lets see music storage hmmmmm.

I have roughly 2000 LP's lets say an average of 10 songs per LP = 20,000 songs

I already have a storage device that will hold all of that in perfect organized condition ready to be accessed on a moments notice.

And best of all it's at Full ANALOG BIT RATE with no reduction from it's original quality.

It's called a Shelf and if I want I can double my storage capacity in about half a day and for around $50.00

Available at a Home Depot or local lumber yard near you!

mp3s sound a lot better than they're given credit for - when properly encoded. Audiophiles don't need to be afraid of them if they take the time to rip their collections properly. The average Joe doesn't have a clue when it comes to ripping. He just accepts the defaults which are almost always skewed towards higher compression (space saving) versus audio quality.

I've heard of folks spending hundreds on tuners yet the average FM broadcast doesn't sound much, if at all, better than high bitrate mp3 in terms of sound quality.

This is the same for me!

No offense but would you dinosaurs please just go away. I don't want to hear about how you had to walk uphill both ways to school and how things were so much better in your day.

I'm 36 and I enjoy the advancements in technology. I enjoy reading about them and using them. This advancement in storage media is very good news. Very good news that has flown right over your heads, Sheesh!

I have a shelf... it holds my records... WHATEVER! Get a life.

I know...

I flew off the handle and I apologize. I just get frustrated when I read the same argument over and over and over. I did not mean to ruffle any feathers as I love both vintage and digital mediums but regardless of personal taste this advancement in storage technology is great news.

It doesn't matter if one loves analog LP recordings or one loves the efficiency of digital formats. Regardless of which camp you're in, this increase in storage capacity is great. I welcome it with open arms.

Nicely done.

MaloCS, please take a few minutes and read through this entire thread: http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=159854&page=4 . I hope that you will find the posts by AK members insightful and helpful. I think that it defines what the Karma in AudioKarma is all about as well as giving meaning to "All Audio - No Attitude".

Ultra-hog,

Your point is taken and I will peruse the posted link. Here's what I got out of this thread BEFORE I posted.

A member posted an article that informed the readers of the latest advancement in storage capacity using spinning electrons. The storage of digital music was used as an example since the agency writing the article was writing it from the perspective of it's use in an iPod.

Then, several members made posts of how this new technology was cool and welcomed in their digital worlds. Then Mark W. makes a sarcastic post stating how his "shelf" can hold 2000 LPs. I can only deduce from this statement that Mark W. made this post to not add to the conversation but to detract from it and insert his "analog" preference into a thread created to discuss an advancement in digital technology. In my opinion, Mark W. brought the attitude to the thread and I just responded to it.

As a result, the direction of the thread went from discussing this cool advancement in technology to defending the quality and reliability of digital music formats. Mark W. hijacked this thread with the long standing feud between vintage audio purists and neo audio purists.

Regardless... I stand by my apology of flying off the handle. I just hope that the "All Audio - No Attitude" mantra is applied to all statements, not just the statements made in response.

No hard feelings and thanks for the dialogue.

Wow.
Awesome technology indeed. As a guy who is moving from cd's to a newer digital medium (not sure which one yet, as I am still looking at options) something like this is ideal. The truly cool thing is not the capacity per se, but rather how this will allow for much higher rez digital formats. Digital might yet replace vinyl someday afterall...
Thanks for the cool news!
