Watch them consoles

I picked up an old console from Craigslist. It had been on a while, but the pic showed something intriguing. Sure enough, under the lid sat a nice clean, and working, Dual 1009. A fairly nice turntable for its day, and with both 45 and lp spindles, a lot of fun. It has been a while since I bothered going after one, but I like to remind everyone to not ignore these things. A few times I have found people would retrofit them in the 60s and 70s with some high end components. I came across an RCA unit that had HK tube units inside, and another with a Thorens TD 135. Sometimes you find some fun lps in them too! Good luck!

There was a post several years ago (either here or on VE), about a guy who was roaming in a thrift store and saw a console. He normally didn't even give them a second look, but this one was made of a very pretty teak and seemed special in comparison to most of the crappy consoled you see. He opened the lid to reveal a Thorens 124, Mcintosh C22 and MR65B. As his heart quickened, he pulled it away from the wall to look inside to reveal a pair of MC40's and Altec horns. He ran to the register to ask how much while trying to look cool, and they said $100. He asked them if they would hold it and they said that they couldn't. At that moment, he saw another guy eyeing it, so he pulled out his credit card, paid for it, went to his car to get his in-car tool kit (some cars came with them) and pulled the components out and took them to his car. He came back later and got the cabinet now that the important stuff was out.

Moral of the story....always lift the lid, always carry a tool kit, and always beat the next guy to the punch.:thmbsp:

I answered a PennySaver ad for a console with Marantz components, assuming it would be something good like a Marantz reciever tucked into a console. Turned out it had been Jerry Herman's(I think that's his name), the song composer, and it was a Marantz 7 and a pair of 9s. Alas, some smart guy was already on his way over to buy it. So I pay attention...
