Okay, so my birthday is tomorrow and my parents are asking me what do I want. I told them I want a vintage receiver and they told me to look for one I want.

So, I just found a very nice Yamaha CR-1020 for $175 and I want to know what does everyone think of the CR-1020? Is this to much? Is it a catch or what?
Is their anything I will need to do to get it back up to specs?

I want to know of anyones personal experience with the CR-1020.
All feedback is welcomed.

I think there is some sort of power supply mod that needs to be done, if it hasn't been already. Price seems fair to me if it's "minty." Average completed listings on the auction site are a bit less though.

I am unaware of any; Rob would know.
The CR-1020 is an excellent receiver. For $175 I'd want one that had been rehab'bed (or at least checked out by someone who knew what s/he was doing).

Since you included a link this will probably wind up in Dollars & Sense.

I have been watching it. Wondering who is going to get it.

Of the receivers under $200 available for a birthday purchase, that may be the class of the lot and would be my choice.

$175 is still a bit pricey to me if I were paying, so it better be as said in near mint and fully operating condition. And you really want it. Maybe ask if he would accept $150. He does say "Asking" which may give you some leeway. Says "works fine." But for $175 should work great. I usually ask in my email if there are any problems with lights, weak channels, static, sound issues, etc.

Any vintage may require an FM/AM alignment or bias/DC adjustment (whichever is appropriate).

Check
Do stations get strong signal on meter? All lights and Stereo light and meters work? Are stations aligned correctly on the tuning dial?

Are channels balanced with no weak channel? Sound full and rich good stereo image?

But best to listen before you buy to see if current condition is satisfactory especially if you do not have skills or funds for restoration.

My CR-800 which had been stored for about 15 years needed a little tweaking with the AM/FM (this usually requires a tech), and adjusting the Idle Current (need service manual and multimeter) restored full rich imaging I remembered. Also had to replace lights for meter and dial pointer.

Oh and Happy Birthday!

update 11/26: I also did the usual deoxit of the controls and connections on the back (because one of the channels was weak) to get full volume without jiggling. It obviously worked because I totally forgot about it until today. But 8/10 cosmetic: What are they? I would be concerned if there were scratches on the front. Corrosion on the back? Again, if so, a tough sell for the $175 asking price.

Man, if only it was your birthday a couple weeks ago! Then I would have had a PERFECT CR-820 for you!

Good luck with whatever you get.

If it sounds good there are only a couple of things it might need; new lamps (4 - 12V 60mA), idle current adjustment (no DC offset adjustment), and perhaps alignment tweak. The case on the 1020 is real wood veneer and minor marks can be sanded out. AFAIK there is no service bulletin mods for the powere supply, although I do replace the fusistors. The 2SD234 voltage regulators are fine for the 1020.
