What Do You Think Of This: Realistic STA-2100

My cousin bought a STA-2100 new in 1978. Think he paid the full price of what was it $600 back then? He sold it to me in 1983 for $300 with a matching three head cassette. Ran it exclusively until around 1999 when I got a SPEC-1 & SPEC-4 setup. It has been repaired three times in that time frame. But I really think the problem stems from band aid repairs. The so-called tech who worked on it did a half a** job. Right now it sits in my frontroom. It needs some repair. After I get a new house and settled I plan to have it repaired because it is one damn nice receiver. It has the most bass of any amp I have ever used. The tuner is great. Has more than enough power. Mike the tech here in town is great I know he can get it going correctly. If you can't handle the name 'Realistic' try to get past it and try one you will be impressed! They are one of the underdogs of the vintage world.

Thanks for the advice vintagestereo :thmbsp: i just bought a realistic sta-2100. very nice transformer. 8 transistors the only bad thing is the left selector knob is gone :( but i have the schematic    any info about the hitachi 2sb655a transistors ?

Yes dont waste alot of time trying to find originals.
If you need replacements you can use On Semicondutor MJ21193 ond 94.

ok thanks glenn. i tested the receiver on my system. i'm very impressed i can go above 125 watts without any distortion. it have an equal transformer like my rx-1603 but i have the impression it have more power in it. the overload of my rx jumps in on those levels.

I'm sorry i have to say it, but this unit is unbelieveble i can go to 300 watts on my meters !!! every protection you ever dreamed of is onboard. if there is something wrong with one of your speakers the speaker jumps automaticly on a lower volume so you always can stay playing. why are they ever stopped building such monsters !!!! :gigglemad

whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy :pity:

Of course the highest number on my meters is 200 watts, and i don't say i go above 125 watt rms. i only say that the real music peaks of my pointers go above those 200 watts, i think something like 300 watts.

Never said you did.
i only say that the visible peaks of my meters go above those 200 watts, i think something like 300 watts.
I can see where one might think that. However thats not going necessarily
equate to 300 watts. Ive had these on the bench before and I
cant say I was able to get 300 watts out of them.

The bottom line here is that this is a nice receiver with a very good
reputation. If the unit is in good condition and someone is out to sell
one no hype will be necessary.

Well, my STA-2100 arrived today. You've all seen what it looks like on the outside.....so, here's a nudie! Yes, the construction is every bit as beefy as we've been told. It is a quality piece!

Well Yuh Dude!! It says 'Quality' right there on the transformer cover!
But seriously I have one and Yes! the build is great! Hope you enjoy yours too!! :thmbsp:

Here's another angle..... The controls are very large and "beefy" looking as well. Guess that was the design theme. This is no "Where's the beef?" Receiver! :lmao:

how does it sound compared to other receivers you have? I've heard the bass can be muddy...thats why I've held off buying one.

Ed -- I've got some DCM Time Frame 700s lying around, so I'll hook her up to those tomorrow and report back. Frankly, I'm quite surprised that Radio Shack sold a Receiver so well made.

According to this Rat Shack ad, an STA-2100 was operated at "full power, 24 hours a day for three weeks, and didn't fail in any way." This ad also includes the most important specs, in case you're interested........

Hi Guess i've got the wrong one mine is the sta-2100d it lights up but no sound.Had this back in Tampa Fl moved it from one room to another and the sound quit on me any idea what might be wrong with it and anybody close to me that works on them?I live in Bearden Ar now. It's to heavy to ship.Any ideas? Thanks mushy

There’s a quite a few different things that could
cause this. Your going to need to get it to someone
for a checkup. Not sure who’s in that particular area
that services audio. You may have no choice but to
ship it before its all said and done.
