What DVD- or Blu Rayplayer...?

Hi

I 've always had quite a bit of interest in audio, and was really into de Sony ES-series in the '90, but couldn't afford it as a young guy... Meanwhile I have quite the '90 ES-stuff I like.

5.1 had my interest too, but not more than my interest. Especially, since tv-stations don't broadcast in 5.1, but in stereo. Now... today I'm mostly watching movies streamed directly from local stations, but it seems most movies they are streaming... I've watched already. So... when one sees popping up DVD's for 1 €, or 400 DVD's for 150 €, one starts to think, why not buy a DVD-player.

So, here comes my question, what DVD-player do you guys advice? New or old one? In case of old, any Sony ES-like (or similar) gems I might need to check out? Or rather a Playstation? I read that the old Playstation 1 (first generation I think) was awesome for audio as well, I just read that the Playstation 3 is a decent DVD-player as well... I'd like a DVD- or Blu Ray-player that not only plays DVD's, but can also serve as a decent CD player (again, think Sony ES). I've got some quite decent Dali speakers next to the tv, so I'd like to be able to sit back and enjoy some decent audio as well...

In case the Playstation is a good option, what would be a good price? I see e.g. Playstation 3 incl. 20 games for sale for +/- 75 €...

Thanks all!

I have a Sony BDP-S380 Blu-Ray Disc/DVD player hooked up to my brandy new Sony system, but haven't played any DVD's on it yet, just an old James Bond movie Blu-Ray.
I liked the Sony ES-series components too but couldn't afford them either.

Players are getting scarce and new ones of good quality re getting pricier every time I turn around. If you can find one of the later Oppo players at a price you can afford, buy it!

Definitely Blu-Ray vs DVD.
But why not a universal player that plays them all?

Always wanted to try this one... Marantz UD9004.

Right now, using the Oppo 105D.
Very nice universal and can be found under $1k.

Yes, I even use one of my 2 separate, over 10 yrs., old S/PDIF coax connected to my DAC, OPPO UDP-203 Universal as a powered up 24/7/365 all day playing a 1 Terabyte flash drive sourced WAV. ripped purposed music player, with the other same model in my living room`s A/V rack used primarily as a BR/DVD/SACD/CD optical player. Excellent sounding, well built and reliable players, IMO/E.

I would recommend getting an Ultra HD (i.e. 4k) player so you can play everything from old school DVDs to 4k discs. At a bare minimum get a HD player. IMO, you don't need to get a high end player because the difference between high and low end players isn't enough to justify the cost. What matters the most is the quality of your TV and audio components. Buy more discs with the money you save.

You can find used players in thrift stores, eBay, FBM etc. for as little as $25, or less. I picked up a Sony HD player earlier this year at the local thrift store for free because it never sold due to the lack of a remote. I bought an aftermarket remote from eBay for $10 and it works just fine. Even if it lasts a year or two, I have got my mony's worth out of it.
