Genuinely curious what drive 'us'.
Of course the elements I mention can relate to each other.
Please tell more about your choices, context makes things richer!

My take~
I definitely have affinity with sound quality, but it's mainly about music and enjoying + supporting a subculture (dj'ing and organising events) for me..
I also like to dabble in DIY and I've made some music, but these are sidenotes.

I'd say music first and foremost. The record store is an excellent way to clear my head and its great dropping the needle on new music.

Next would be trying different gear. I recently got a Wiim to try lossless streaming. I like hunting for good deals and trying different stuff.

In that order. I don’t listen to music on substandard equipment. Substandard being laptop speakers, earbuds, et al.

Music is Vibrations and Frequencies. Our bodies are all frequencies and vibration. Good music helps to keep those vibrations at a healthy frequency. Keep in mind our bodies are mostly water and Masaru Emoto has proven that words, thought, and music change the water structure by observing its crystals after exposure.

What do I think about "Audio"? Well, usually when asked this question before on the threads, the appreciation divided into three flexible groups:

1. audio equipment gear

2. music

3. different degrees of both.

Years back it was pretty much music in my formative years for dancing, parties and all that go with youth. But as I got older, audio systems became more important and the ability to either build/buy better quality gear.

In recent times, I've gone back to music that is more than a hobby, and it's now an integral part of my life style.

I'm presently content with my system, and the only ongoing change seems to be obtaining higher Bluetooth rate gear and in turn means more ripping and upgrading BT speakers/players.

The whole thing, in all of its manifestations, is just... sumpin' to do. Something to do with my excess time, excess money, excess imagination, and excess desire. It can absorb a good bit of excess mental energy.

To me, It's definitely about the music. I'd classify myself as a "music enthusiast". I obviously want good sounding equipment, but I am in no way chasing the perfection and minute improvements that an audiophile would want.

1) music - enjoyment of the art
2) sound quality - better sound for improved enjoyment
3) pro interest - as a performing musician and live sound enthusiast (I mixed our band) what the audience hears was a huge priority for me

Just my take on this.

Generally, the artists, musicians, composers, engineers, producers spent a lot of time, talent, experience and money to create the sound they wanted.

My objective is to try to do them justice and enjoy what they have created.

It really doesn't matter if that proves difficult to achieve.
I just enjoy the challenge of understanding and building my audio systems in an attempt to meet that goal.

For me it's always been about the music. It certainly doesn't hurt to put together the best possible system I could afford. I was a singer guitar player for over 40 years until about 13 years ago a series when of strokes took away my ability to play or sing. So now the highlight of my week is twice weekly I sit in my 15x27 Shop/music room and spin tunes all day while enjoying a few cold beers and a few puffs of herb I've grown for years. If I couldn't listen to music I see no way to carry on with life.
