What is that thing on top of the radio?

So I'm watching "A Christmas Story" on TV with Mrs. Wiggy, and I noticed a shot of the radio in the living room. On top of the radio is a 'thing'. What is that, an antenna of some kind?

I understand the radio is a Westinghouse 780-X, but what is that globe on top?

My grandma had one of those. It's actually an alcohol dispenser. The guy on the top is a bowler and you lift off the top half of the thing to reveal a pump dispenser and 5 of 6 shot glasses. You can put whatever beverage you like in the bottle.

As a point of pride , I have never seen that movie .

Might want to read up on the life of Jean Shepherd, one of the great humorists of the past century. I loved his radio show in the '60s and '70s. The guy could talk for hours, totally unscripted, while holding his audience's rapt attention.

One of the only Christmas movies I like anymore. :)

My favorite part of that movie is when he is imagining how sorry his family will be when he goes blind from the soap his mother washed his mouth out with.

I used to have those odd fantasies when my parents punished me for something I thought was unfair. ;)

Yes, the movie is based on just one chapter, or story from a great humorous book. Good writer and great narrator. Why would one be proud to miss one of the best movies ever?

From wiki:
" A Christmas Story is a 1983 American Christmas comedy film based on the short stories and semi-fictional anecdotes of author and raconteur Jean Shepherd, based on his book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash... has since become a holiday classic ...
In 2012, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"...

I guess you are right. So let's just call it a "bowling ball booze thingy" ;)

You can actually see the bowler shadow on the wall in the original post.

"Only I didn't say "Fudge"......................."!
Great line!

"Fra-Geeley........I think It's French"
Wonderful movie. Many of the toys in the dept store windows were borrowed from collectors.

Great job everyone who identified it as a bowling ball / booze decanter thing. Wow, I had no idea! Thanks to all!

Darren McGavin had to have a ball making that...a complete departure from his previous roles. We've loved that movie for years & years.
