What is the difference between altec woofer 416-z and 416-16z?

I saw from the picture, 416-z is green-frame and 416-16z is black-frame.
How about impedance, year, quality of sound, dimension (same diameter, size, etc...?
Could you please kindl advice?
Thank you,
Mongkol

My understanding is that the 416-z is an OEM version of the 416-8A - the same 8ohm driver but the 'z' doesn't have the stamped metal magnet cover which is only cosmetic. Color might be different depending on year, my 416-8A's are black.

The 416-16z is a 16ohm version of the same driver.

Thanks so much Billfort for the answer,
what does OEM mean? still need more explain in difference of sound quality and year of produced?

Original Equipment Manufacturer - a term used for a component that is built by one manufacturer to be used in larger finished products. In this case, the 'z' version would have been used in finished speakers and they didn't get the pretty cosmetic covers of the same woofer sold as raw drivers (416-8A).

Not sure why year produced matters but you might find that info or someone who can tell you on the Altec Users Board. If you are asking about the difference of sound quality between a 416-8z and a 416-16z I can't comment as I've only heard 416-8 but I suspect they are pretty damn close with the 16ohm version possibly a little better for some tube amps (if used with 16ohm compression driver/crossover). Again, you might get an answer at the Altec board.

I don't think there's any impedance difference in a 416Z vs a 416-16Z, I believe both are 16 ohms as they were used in 846A Valencia systems, just my $.02, Dave.

:scratch2:

Geez Billfort,I hope you're wrong.

Nothing personal,I respect and enjoy reading your posts. It's just that I've been made aware that my Valencias were'nt a pair. One has the grey baffle and green 811,the other has the black baffle and the black 811.
I know from opening both that one woofer is the 416-16z, the other the 416z.
I hope this dosen't affect the sound quality, pair matching too badly. :sigh:

Take a DCR reading acrooss the woofer without the crossover hooked up, anything over 8 ohms is 16 ohms on these, I'd expect about 11 ohms DCR!! BTW - Impedance is supposed to be measured at 1khz.

I'm probably wrong then guys, just going by what I read somewhere. My memory is real bad but I think I got the idea that the '-z' was different than the '-16z' from gonefishin who's brother built a pair of speakers with these drivers.

I'd definitely take dgwojo's and theophile's word on this over mine mjp, the voice of experience and an owner, well that would be the truth as apposed to my suspect memory :) .
