I have an old McIntosh C39. Last week there was a power surge blowout the fuse and 8 bulbs now when I plugin the unit the volume indicated 99 also both the Record: Turner and Listen: Turner light are on, if I pressed the Power button the MUTE light keep blinking

Does anyone know what is wrong? or where can I find/purchase the service manual?

Thank you in advance

Hello Dan

Where are you ?

C39 is not so old
1) first check power supply voltages (all)
2) replace all components dammaged by the surge
3) giving or selling you SM will not help you to know from where it is coming from
4) I think that some IC' s has been dammaged and normal function is not actually possible

come back to us with report

welcome on AK

Hello clinic-audio

I am from Australia :-)

1) I replaced one of the 2 fuses then tested all the components in the power supply area, they are fine.

2) Apart from the faulty fuse I don't see any visible damaged/burn component but again I haven't dismantle the whole unit it looks very complex.

3) I was hoping with the SM it can give me some idea where to start looking

4) I am guessing the problem is somewhere between the control board and power supply board? I hope that someone else who worked on a C39 before can point me to the right direction.

I think the most logical approach would probably dismantle the unit then inspect the control board

McIntosh uses distributors to deal with the complexities of the various taxes and trade rules many countries impose upon U.S. goods.

If you contact the factory service and parts department they will refer you to your local importer to order a schematic for your local tech.

Correct, I wanted to get a new power meter for my MC452 (its gone intermittent), they are not serviceable, they have to be replaced, McIntosh referred me to the local importer.
There was no way I could convince Mc to sell me the meter no matter what I said.
I have called the local importer here unsuccessfully a number of times.
So I have given up and the MC452 will have to just have an intermittent meter.

Thank you C_dk,

I contacted technical support waiting for them to get back to me
To save you some time, you might as well look up who the McIntosh distributor is in Australia and contact them, McIntosh will not sell you parts, they will direct you to the local dealer or Local importer.

I was thinking I could get a couple meters a while back. Yea - No way. Makes sense, too. Those meters are a huge part of their brand identity, they don't want them flooding the market for the $19 each that they probably cost.

Ah yeah well, you missed the 3rd digit, $154US for a replacement meter for the MC452.......

Ok I got a respond from Landon Mullen and he advising to check the solder connection on the supply board. He was also kind enough to send me the SM. If anyone needs please let me know

Hello ducz,
a friend of mine died and his C39 is now living with another friend of mine, but has some little issues. Can you send me the SM, please?
Don't want to interrupt this conversation here, but 2 issues excist:
1. Have to switch the C39 2-3 times on and off till the Volume actually changes. Remote works, pot-motor turns, but no changes in volume. Sometimes it works directly.
2. Above was the only issue for a very long time, but now also the C39 goes out with a plop 1-2 times per day.

Thx in advance,
Remco

Hello remdeck

welcome on the best Mc Intosh forum informations

is it a 2 channels input configuration or 6 channels ?

Landon is a good egg, but remember the time you steal from him keeps him away from repairing someone elses unit......

Kev, back in the day we just bought a replacement from Mac parts but eventually after years the replacement ran out.

It was Gregory who had the courage to cut the plastic welds, disassembling a meter for his beloved MC2205 and documented with pictures to get at the brass connections that need burnishing.

You might just have to get inside of the meter to take a look and see how similar they are to the past meters.

About 4-5 years ago my C39 died. It would not turn on. I rebuilt the entire standby power supply but the problem did not go away. Unless I was mentally missing something, this was the hardest Mcintosh unit I ever saw to disassemble. I could not figure out how to remove the power supply board that was directly behind the front panel. I ended up sending it to Terry Dewick who found a shorted IC that was pulling down the power supply. I think it was on the lower HT circuit board with the Dolby chip on it. The power supply voltages snake though several circuit boards via ribbon cables. (I only used it for 2 channel). Worked fine after the repair but I sold it later to get an MX130 with the tuner.

Clinic-audio, thx for the welcome.
Posted my experience with my MC7300 in this forum
The C39 is the 6 channel version with THX.
My friend uses it in 2 channel only.

THX for being here

Thanks Chris, I might just do that as its now been 7 months since I have ordered the meter from the local distributor, I have even paid for it, and when I ring them up they say "its on its way".....
