What pre-amp would you folks recommend with the Mc275 VI & La Scala speakers? I want to go with a McIntosh tube pre-amp & I was thinking the McIntosh c-22... Any thoughts on this? Thank You! Bill

C22 or C11 pre is good with MC275 but La Scala speakers wont give you a good punch.

La Scalas aren't for everybody, but they do some things really well. I have a pair of them and am definitely on the la scala supporter side. Whatever preamp you use make sure it has low noise, la scalas are totally unforgiving of small amounts of hum or hiss which would be inaudible with conventional speakers.

Sounds like a great combo to me,I have LaScalas and plenty of "mid bass" ..which I prefer. Enjoy that 275! AL

Depending on your source you may not need a preamp with such high sensitivity speakers. Maybe a passive with source switching and volume.
Best,
John

I don't feel the speakers have any bearing on your preamp choice, power amp yes, preamp no.

It would help if you tell us more, like what will or what your planing as for the front end, your sources.

You said the C22 in your post are you talking about the new or old one, big difference here.

Thank You MickeySmile, maxhifi, AlTinkster92, nerdorama, SmartAss, 4-2-7 & mkane! John, I like the idea of a passive with source switching & volume If I could potentially get away without a preamp. I'll go check those out...Smart ass & 4-2-7, I would go new. At first my goal is just playing through my Oppo Sonica Dac with iTunes & some app's on my phone. But I'm having trouble getting it hooked up. The guy from Oppo is going to call later today. 4-2-7, In the future I'd like a CD player & tuner. Maybe a turntable... I read where the Oppo was the best for DAC... I heard Klipschicorn's 20+ years ago & still remember how much I loved them. So I should love the La Scala's... Thanks Again! A million dollars worth of info here! Bill

Heres another million dollars worth Bill. This passive is outstanding using Slagle TVC modules with a CDP where you have to much gain. Not bad using a turntable either. About a $450 investment if U DIY. I have a Bottlehead Quickie pre that uses batteries that will compete with units much higher in price. And 'Welcome' to the friendliest place on the net.

Bill,
If your Oppo has a built-in volume control you can determine if it has enough output level to get your amp to full power, or at least a reasonable power level for your need. If it does, then a passive may work ok for you. I have a Khozmo which is a nice unit with source switching. There are many other options as well.

Good luck with your project,

Gee thanks, now you've got "it's a small world" going though my head :)

Passive pre looks a good idea, I ended up putting attenuators between my pre and amp to get the noise to acceptable levels with the la scalas. These speakers are ridiculously sensitive, I never heard any hum at all with the old speakers and with these, you hear everything.

The main defect of la scalas is that they're the size of washing machines and don't do deep bass. Their strengths are, well listen to them ant you tell me!

I've heard mixed reviews about many passives, if not a great implementation they can sound thin apparently. I'm guessing the goal with the mac tube gear is to impart a little warmth and ease of presentation to the klipschs while maintaining accuracy and transparency, both the C2200 and C2300 will achieve this goal.

You could do a little research on the juicy blueberry extreme, another highly regarded tube pre that rarely comes up on the used market! Thing is though it's hard to beat the resalability of mac gear, if you don't like it you can sell it and generally recoup your entire investment...can't say that about many brands!

Thank You mkane, nerdorama, maxhifi, Don Bocadill, capt.chaos & sqisavior! "The friendliest place on the net'! ;)... The Oppo has a volume control & it is loud enough so yes a passive would work. And be cheaper! (so I can more on another source!)... The size of washing machines! LOL... I'm going to check on 2200's & 2500"s & go from there... Bill
