What speakers would BEST a set of mirage m5si

Dynamicmad

I just want it to sound good
I am auditioning a pair of mirage M5 SI speakers. I love my local audio store they are letting me audition them for a week, its always nice to hear them in your own set up. I like them the sound stage and just sheer sound they throw. I listen to all types of music from electronica, to blues, jazz classic rock and beyond so I need an all around speaker. They so far have sounded great with all types but I just threw in Cold play Viva La vida and I feel like I am watching them live HOLY SOUND BATMAN awesome full bass with nice laidback highs My question is this I can get them for around 400 in the are in mint condition. What speaker cold best these for around 400 bucks.

I think you answered your own question.....Mirage are great, under-appreciated high end speakers. To me ~$400 is a good deal if they match your room and equipment.

Around $400? Let me tell one thing about M5si - from my own experience (I had a pair).
Great speakers, no question about it. But....and it a big one - sooner or later you will find something even better. $400 on a used gear market is a substantial sum.
And guess what...you will have a hard time selling Mirages...they are big, very expensive to ship and what is the chance someone in your neck of the woods will be that much interested?
But with all that said they are amazing speakers. If you have enough power to drive them and enough space to make sure they are far from walls you'll like what you hear. And there is a chance they will be your last pair of speakers you want to keep forever....until you bump into some other gem.
And be careful asking "What speakers would BEST a set of mirage m5si"
You might get an answer, or two ...or a hundred...

Looking

Yep was looking to see some might say at the 400 mark I am running them with 100 watts a side would like to get some larger mono blocks if I keep them

Few replies is something good.

It would be very difficult to better them for that money, Im talking used of course. There are some choices out there, but I wouldnt call them better! Just different. Those Mirage are very sweet sounding speakers. So much sound for such little cost should be criminal. Go audition brand new speakers in the 2000$ area and report back to us how they compare to your Mirage ;)

What amplifier are you running on them now?

It depends on what you want. Plenty of speakers such as bookshelf ProAcs would smoke the Mirage when it comes to holographic imaging, precision, transparency. Many speakers such as Thiel would be streets ahead when it comes to tight, controlled bass. Some Kef Reference would win for midrange neutrality. Having sold professionally and owned all of these brands and spent hundreds of hours listening to them in all sorts of combos, would I say anything would beat the Mirage for giving you the experience of live musicians playing for you IF you happen to like their presentation? No way, the Mirage are unique and hard to best if you like them and can accept the fact they sound quite different from most other speakers and do not have some of their audiophile characteristics.

The M-5 series is big, but not as hard to sell as the 3 or the 1.

Simple answer: buy them and enjoy the music!

I am running a rotel ra980bx integrated it throws out 100 watts a channel

I can't think of anything better that would usually sell for 400 bucks used unless you find a major score somewhere. Mint M3si's are selling for around a 1000 bucks. 400 seems like a very good deal.

Bi wire

So I've been reading and the articles state bi wire these speakers really opens them up. What say you

That would be a steal. I had a pair of them. Huge if somewhat diffuse soundstage, a refined tweeter, and truly remarkable bass from 2 6.5" woofers. I actually like them better for HT. But I longed for the image focus of my old Walshes and 86ed them. I remember talking to Strohbeen like 20 yrs ago mentioning I bought them and he said "oh no, you may stray, but you'll be back. We've got you for life." So true!

They like a lot more power than that. Get a real amp and then you will have found your Holy Grail of speakers.

For me, Mirage are great. But spent some time on placement. They are sensitive to that. But when you hit the right spot, they are amazing. I bought M7Si brand new, back in 1995. The last couple of years I have been looking for new speakers, while the midrange edges didn't look as good as new anymore. So it was just a matter of time. But I couldn't find anything that for me sounded as good as my M7Si. Then last year I found a set of M3Si with new midrange drivers.... A small upgrade. But they are fantastic. I also upgraded amplifier from 2 monotages, to 4. After days moving them around, to find the sweet spot, they now sounds fantastic. From the vere deep base, and all the way up. I am suprised that no one seems to try to make something with the same kind of sound....

I think your photo of the Mirage's with your laptop screen showing your post as you type it ought to be in the running for thread photo of the year :)

We now return to our regular scheduled programming...
