What Type of Jazz is This? HELP! I Need Suggestions!

HI,

I am the type of person that loves many different types of music, but I am picky about the bands I will listen to. Most of the jazz that I have hear in my life I have liked, but it hasn't stuck out to me as something that I would get into, BUT, there have been very few jazz songs that I have heard over the years that have really grabbed my attention. However, every time i hear a song like this I never get a chance to find out the name or who is performing it. For a long I have been looking for some jazz that I can really fall in love with but for the life of me I CAN'T find it! It's driving me crazy because I know it is out there, I've heard it, but I just can't find it. I need the collective help of AK to let me know what jazz I should listen to.

Ok, now I know that this is a tall order if you can't base your suggestions on anything, but I do have something for you. There is a band that I absolutely idolize called Dave Matthew's Band. You may have head of them. For the most part they just play rock, but many of the musicians in the band are very competent jazz musicians and once in a wile they let loose. Below I have links to three DMB songs that have some really good examples of the type of jazz that I am looking for, and I want more of it! Please listen to at least the fist video from 4:38 until the end, and if you like listen to the other suggestions as well, and let me know who you think I would like.

Thank you very very much for your help in my search. I am dying to find some more jazz!

For each of these songs, you don't have to listen to all of it, just drag the play bar to where I have stated, and listen from there.

#41: This song from 3:42 on, and especially from 4:38 when the saxiphone comes in is the best example of the type of jazz that I am trying to find. Especially listen to the drumming, because that is something that seems to be lacking in all the other jazz that I have found.

Dreaming tree: Listen to the section from 6:33-7:30.

If you want a jazz drummer, look no further than Buddy Rich. Many, many great drummers attest to Buddy as their inspiration, even Ginger Baker.

You might like those three.

Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría, Afro-Cuban Latin jazz percussionist

Leandro Barbieri (Gato Barbieri) , Argentinean jazz tenor saxophonist

Charles Frank "Chuck" Mangione, American flugelhorn player

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. From an initial listen I think that I will like Jean Luc Ponty, and Chuck Mangione the most. Buddy Rich is a phenomenal drummer and I really enjoyed watching and listening to some of his work too.

After listening to the clips i posted, what would you label this type of jazz as? Jazz fusion? Jazz Funk? Something else?

Please keep the suggestions coming. I really appreciate your advice.

I would describe some of Dave Matthew's music/songs as, Jazz-rock fusion.
His band is also one that I like. I especially like him when he joins Santana experimenting in Latin jazz fusions.

But overall, Jazz can be very hard to define and quantifies, I certainly can't. It span such a broad range of music styles.
Joachim-Ernst Berend from Germany, a music journalist, can be described as the expert in Jazz.

Generally speaking, fusion is what you are seeking. Look back to Return to Forever and Weather Report. Also, Lenny White had some great releases. It's a vast pool of great music for this style.

My personal favorite, if you want something that's "now", would be Trio Beyond. Here's a clip, no horns though... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks441Hbl_DU&feature=related

I would also suggest you look into Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten projects. These are also very current and have what I think you are after.

Lately I have been spinning Extraction which is a HUGE album by Wooten, Chambers and Howe. Here's a sample... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZ4znnwjNu0&feature=related

Just as a thought, you MIGHT enjoy David Sanborn. But then again you may hate him.

A few notable artist/musician in what people call fusion style of jazz are, Jean-Luc Ponty, Al Di Meola, Jimi Hendrix, Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, Frank Zappa, Gary Burton, Tony Williams, Larry Coryell, John McLaughlin, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Herbie Hancock.

Since you like Dave Matthew, Chuck Mangione, and Jean-Luc Ponty styles, some jazz musicians and their compositions will not be to your liking. As I've told on my previous post, jazz is very hard to define, all people, myself included, will have their own definition of the type of jazz that musicians plays, and who are the jazz musicians.
I'll give you an example, the Rolling Stones are defined as a rock band, true enough, I also define them as a Blues band and some of their songs I define as Jazz Funk, and now I can see people saying, he's out to lunch.
The thing is, just buy/collect the jazz music that you like, and not necessarily the type.

I couldn't agree more. It's finding the jazz music that I like that's the problem. I really am not looking for a specific genre. It's the sound that I'm looking for. Those little segments in the three songs that I posted are to me absolutely fantastic, but I want to find a band that plays full songs like that. Please keep the suggestions coming.

Have a listen to these two artists, Diana Krall, and Herbie Mann.
If you like songs, not just instrumentals, Diana Krall is an excellent artist.

Ronnie Earl is primarily known as a blues guitarist, but he plays in a number of different jazz styles with some great backing musicians. There's quite a variety on each album - you may want to sample a few tracks to get an idea...

Some rock jazz bands

Night Ark
Caldera
The Section
Think you would enjoy John Klemmer too. Try Touch, Barefoot Ballet or Life Styles

If it's fusion you like, consider these two Miles Davis albums from the early days of that genre:

In a Silent Way

Bitches Brew

Thanks for the suggestions, I will give those a listen.

It not necessarily fusion that I'm after. Fusion is a very broad genre. I'm looking for a group who plays music similar to the samples i have in the first post. Listen to the segments i mentioned and see if it reminds you of anything.

Thanks

I listened to your clips and, frankly, I am at a loss. Your clips don't sound at all like jazz to me. This isn't a criticism, but to my ears, those Dave Matthews clips sound more like he is adding a jazzy sound to what are basically pop or rock songs. You make reference to the drumming, which again sounds like rock drumming.

Yes, it is very possible that I am way out to lunch. Carter Beauford's main inspiration is Buddy Rich, and he was the house drummer on a BET jazz show with Ramsey Lewis. He has also played in a few jazz bands during his career (I wish I could find some of their stuff), but you are right, DMB is a rock band. I do however think that many elements of his jazz drumming come though in some of these segments. the section I was referring to in my first post was right at 4:38 on the first video when the saxophone comes in, and the beat changes. I would agree with your that this is not your traditional jazz sound (or drumming), but jazz has such a massive range that i figured it would fit in there somewhere. I certainly haven't found this sound in any other rock.

Even if you can't call this jazz, are there any songs or groups that this sound reminds you of?
