What was the last movie you watched?

Just watched Humphrey Bogart in "The Big Sleep" wow... the dialog is out of this world... I wonder if people actually used to talk to each other in that manner, or if it was just Hollywood. Probably a bit of both... I remember my Grandfather had a way of insulting people so smoothly that they shook his hand and walked away, then five minutes later they figured out what he said and they went away fuming.

Hey Mr Krautmaster, totally agree with your sentiment regarding the script in the Big Sleep. William Faulkner and a couple of others are credited with the screenplay. The dialogue has his style written all over it. And some folks did talk like that back in the day, typically just to let you know they had spent some time in college. A college education was a bridge too far for most citizens in the 1940s and earlier.

El Cid (1961) Charlton Heston Sophia Loren (Roku/Youtube - free with some commercials)

I hadn't watched this in decades. A massive medieval epic as only Charlton Heston can pull off - and Sophia Loren is breathtakingly beautiful.

Gorgeous cinematography, sweeping musical score, and a great ending.

The original "noir" films really set themselves apart with that kind/level of dialogue...and of course the introduction and idea of the "anti-hero"...fantastic!

Ripley (2024) Netflix
An excellent neo noir limited series. A much darker and menacing Ripley than the earlier movie. We loved it.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916) Kino Blu ray.

The first movie adaptation of the Jules Verne story, and rather extraordinary for a 108 year old movie.

Capt Nemo has been searching the Oceans to get revenge on the man who wronged him. I won't tell you what that wrong was, but it's pretty effective.

t features footage actually shot underwater.

If you are into silent films, this is pretty much a must-have.

Step Down to Terror (1958) Colleen Miller, Charles Drake, Rod Taylor. Kino Blu ray.

This is a remake of Hitchcock's 1943 film, Shadow of a Doubt. and while it's not as good as that movie, it's still pretty darn good.

Chandler's novels are well worth the read.

Touch of Evil (1958) - Orson Welles
Previous watch was over half a century ago. It was okay. Since then, many now consider it one of Orson's very best. My take hasn't changed all that much. ymmv
