Hi, I am new to this forum game so forgive me if I have started off on the wrong foot. I have a Akai 4000DS that I have just had o/hauled and serviced by a very nice guy in Aylesbury Uk for £40.00. My question is what is the difference between the the 4000DS and the mk2 version?
I have a Sony TC630, minus speakers.

Thanks in advance.

As a point of interest I was told by a very experienced analogue sound man that video tape could be used on R/R. Obviously it would need to be sliced. I am toying with the idea of knocking up a tape slicer to do the job.

It is unlikely that you would be able to slice a long piece of videotape accurately enough. Besides, it would not be long enough. You would then need to slice several entire videotapes end-to-end.

Why don't you just score on some actual reel-to-reel tape. It is still widely available.

Hi Fred, I use to work in leather and made a leather slicer for making braids so the idea was to follow the same pattern in a modified form. As for existing tape that is available it is quite expensive in the Uk, plus I like the idea of rercycling old Vhs Tapes. I reckon one tape sliced would be about the same as a 5"- 5-1/2" reel. The other factor is the challenge. I don't mind splicing if I need to get the required length. The tapes I have at the moment are BASF, Mastertape, Ferrotape, all nearly 50 yrs old and sound ok when run through the Akai. They were all recorded on a Vortexion WVB.
