Okay folks,
We al have our days when that certain tune just needs to be played. SOmedays your just in a mellow or twitchy mood. But when you just kind of hanging in limbo - not sure what mood your in or what tune is going to give you that fix you need. How do you pick?

I rarely am lucky enough to have my albums sorted and alphabetized, so I just pick the center of a stack and pull an album.
It usually works for me. Sometimes I need to go through three or four pulls. SO how do you pick?

BTW - tonights first pull is ELO's Time - an awesome album to say the least.

What onepixel said. Failing that, I browse the shelves and usually pick something that I've only listened to once or twice. It gives me an opportunity to become more familiar with something "new," even if I've owned it for a while. Sometimes it just does not satisfy, or even worse it is outright offensive for the time/my mood, so off it goes and another is picked.

I splurged and stopped by the music stores on my way home from work. My selections were based on threads and recommendations from all of you fellow AKers. So far, you guys are batting 1000. This is the way I will select my music from now on.

Oh, and NPR has some great programs for reviewing both new and old artists. Give them a listen or go to their website for other recommendations, then run them by AK. It has worked for me lately.

If I can't decide, I just go back to the old favorite, Led Zeppelin. I'll think that I have a new favorite band, but every time I put on the Zep, those thoughts fade away. Zep is still the favorite, and they have something for whatever mood you might be it. It's what makes them great, right? :music:

Tonight I just thought about the movies we watched today (the missus is down w/ flu) and ended up playing WAR - Why Can't We Be Friends. If you get a song stuck in your head, listen to it one more time at decent volume, then play something a little simpler or softer. Pretty soon you'll get something else stuck in your head.

Hm... sometimes I just don't listen if I don't know what to listen to... other times I sort of know what genre but not sure what album to play or don't have anything I want to hear so I either fire up FM, XM, or internet radio.

Know exactly what you mean! And its so darn important to start your session right to ensure ensuing audio satisfaction.
What's been working for the last couple of months (when there's no prepared playlist) is to start with old and mellow, perhaps some folk, then go clean a couple of LPs, kill a beer, file away last night's records, etc, then things usually take care of themselves. Best luck finding a remedy!

I generally put the giant music server into Random, and wait/skip through until something strikes me...then I'll make a playlist (jukebox-style) of stuff that relates to that artist or genre.

My record collection is based on music I like, so It's hard to go wrong picking anything. Often I start with "new" (to me) albums. Sometimes, I'll just start flipping through the stack until something strikes me. I only keep around 100-150 albums upstairs at any time, but I try to rotate them.

I also have a 100 disc CD player that I will sometimes trust to come up with something good by just spinning the wheel until it stops on a number. Funny, Tom Waits seems to have a way to stop the wheel pretty often.

Regards,

D-Ray

At such times, I commonly reach into my vinyl stack and randomly pull forward about 3-4" of LP's with one hand and limit my selection from those couple dozen records. After listening to my pick from that limited stack, my mood sometimes is set for further listening.
