Which speakers should I run with my Maggie 9302?

I have a quandry not sure if anything I got is efficient enough for my maggie 9302. I am currently running Advent 1's on it and to me it sounds great. I have heard higher eff. speakers make tubes shine. My choices are the Advent 1's, New Large Advents (need foam), Epi 100's, DLK 1's, AR2ax's, Nova 8b's and Infiity RS9b's. Any of the above going to work. I would love to have some klipsch heresy's but they are way outta the budget right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

try the DLK or the Novas maybe. Any would work, how well is another matter. See what you like best.

There are some Heresies FS in B'town right now for cheap. Might even be within driving distance! I have no affiliation with the seller.

I like the Cornwalls and the Heresies with my Maggie 9304.

Prob the original speakers that were in the console.... Maybe go to salvation army and put it in an empty console where someone else already gutted ( prob by someone from here ) I bet it would sound amazing... THe console gods might forgive you that way as well

My W90's are fantastic with tubes (The first amp I heard them with was an old 12-watt Realistic, and they sounded magnificent... I was shocked). The W70's would also do nicely... even with a small amount of power, as would the W60's. As far as the speakers you have, I'm really-not sure what you'd be best with for that amp. The AR's probably need a lot more power, as would the Advents (The Advents MIGHT be okay, but not optimum). Maybe the Novas like they said.

Like tonyg88 said, your best bet is to go for something from the same era.... (back when tubes were king).

Hey Steve,
Another thought - look for some early 60's vintage speaekrs at the thrift shops. I know that birdcage made my akai's sing very well. But think like coral, or maybe sansui - but only if you can get them on the cheap to try.

Also, if you have any time or abilities, building a set of ewaves will cost you a little bit, but you are likely to come out witha great set of speakers.

BTW - what do you think of the birdcage now?

A little shy on power for you?

Mark

honestly the original console speaker system was frequently not wonderful. Some were rather crap. Magnavox in general was probably a bit above average, especially the models with the horns, but you can do a lot better.

I actually have one of those "rather crap" speaker setup consoles. Its a Hoffman. I would like to figure out something with it, but as it is, its just not that good. Its the old Bose adage, no highs, no lows. The amps are tremendous in that thing, and if I hook them to good speakers it absolutely rocks but in the box, not so much. The boxes are pretty, but I can't listen to mahogany veneer.

Hey Mark,
I love it its plenty of power. I just keep seeing everyone state get efficient speakers and have no idea what any of mine are rated at.

The amp sounds amazing with the advent 1 but I suspect I am missing something. I need my son to help me rotate thses out due to my disability. Between work, school and his band I don't see him much but he will be here today. Its my 23rd wedding anniversary. :)

Congrats on 23 years of wedded bliss!

IIRC the AR2ax are 91 or 92db. The NOVA 8b's really shine after they've had the XOVER reworked. Tinkerbelle IIAC posted up in the spkr forum on it a few years ago. I've got the parts list from PE. About $110 per cabinet. But it's like night and day according to reports. I haven't done mine yet. Need to find some new cabinets for the drivers.....(optimus 5B 's are the same spkr). I like the NOVA's over the AR2ax's tho. Probably just me, but the AR's don't have a lot of punch to them. They are more a classical where the Nova's are probably more for Rock.

Thread deserves a bump.

I have my 9302 back from battradio. As I mentioned in another thread, the mids and highs are just killer. And with my Electro-Voice Interface B's accompanying EQ, the bass is full, but not as tight as it was when being pushed by my old Onkyo receiver. I suspect this is due to "soft clipping"? For the most part, the 12 wpc from the Maggie work just fine with 92 dbs. But I would like a little tighter bass, and while I rarely crank the volume, I do occasionally like a little room thumping.

I'm currently short of coin, so I may have to be patient and wait for one of those rare deals, or I may have to trade up (although I hate the thought of getting rid of my beloved EVs. I'm less committed to my EPI 100s, as good as they are). I'm keeping watching for Klipsch Fortes or Heresys. But (again), getting them will likely require that I lose the EVs.

Maybe I should recap the EVs and see how the sound improves. :scratch2:

Classic Klipsch speakers aren't necessarily known as bass machines so you really will want to audition a set to see if they are better than what you've got currently. I've honestly never heard either the EV's or a set of Hereseys so I couldn't tell you. My KG-4's do OK in the bass department, but not spectacular. My JBL's are better. I can tell you that Klipsch speakers are picky about room placement, so results tend to be highly variable.

Ever try out the EPI's on the Magnavox to see how it does? Worst that can happen is it won't sound too great.

My EVs make subwoofers unnecessary when using the EQ, so I would like something comparable in sound (but more efficient). I'm in no hurry though.

I have listened to the EPI with the Maggie. They sound good, but not much down low. Might give'em another listen now that I have the new iron.
