Who are these actors of yore?

I found this today at an estate sale and it looks SO familiar but I can't place them. I am guessing 1920-40s and initially thought of Greta Garbo but I am not so sure. Who is the guy also? This is a very cool photo, the detail is unreal for b/w. I plan to remove it from the very old frame at some point

The man resembles a cross between Burt Lancaster and Oscar Hammerstein. As for the gal, I got nuthin'. Good luck w/ the search.

By her makeup & hair it's 1920's and don't think they are movie actors. I'd look into opera first then stage.

Did a drag n drop image search; no hits on the guy in the suit, but I kinda got a hit on the suit. Says it's 1920s.

Ran a quick "image check" @ The Big G: the feller is not vocalist John McCormack, @ least not as far as I can see/tell from the images that popped up.
