Who do you think is the best guitar player?

Best Guitarist

Can it go by category??? Its' too broad of a question-- But of the ones Ive seen:

Beck ,Zappa, Clapton, Page, Ronnie Woods, Rory Gallagher, and of course when it comes to straight up improvisation ....Jimmy Hendrix-- Alvin Lee (Ten Years After), Leo Koettke, Jorma, Alman Brothers, Garcia and Weir,Stevie Vai, Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Neil Schoen, Richard Thompson, Joe Satriana (when he isn't talking to aliens), Slash -- ok, Methany , Demiola-- a whole slew of Jazz guys-- I think if you could ask the question by category (of course Zappa would defy the category thing)-e and then maybe ask people to name their favotite work by these artists to substantiate where they are coming from....

For example I got to see a Hendrix Tribute at the Fox In St Louis about 6 weeks ago-- eric Johnson and Satriani played-both were GREAT!!-and believe it or not Kenny Wayne Shepard blew everyone else off the stage that night--and Im not a great fan but Holy Cow-- he was on that night... Where and when did you see these guys does matter-- Just like baseball pitchers, quarterbacks, and all when you see em live it's a whole different thing. Music is great...

There are dozens of guitar players worthy of note. Lately I've been getting into Peter Green from the 60s.

No one has mentioned him. He is under rated but was way ahead of his time. Listen to "Rubber Duck" from 1967 and then try to find something similar from the time. He was a trail blazer for sure....

Also Nils Lofgren needs to be mentioned...

eric Johnson and Kenny Wayne Shepard

I had a VHS tape that was stolen that had these two awesome guitar players on it. It was from an Austin City Limits concert back in the late 90s.

I sure do miss the music on that tape.

Rome

My vote goes for Steve Howe.

he excelled in the electric using a hollow body jazz guitar and impeccable tone. With well composed music that really made the guitar stand out. He mastered nuance and detail and is an incredible overdubber when doing his solo work.

He plays classical, metal string, koto, mandolin, dobro, and all kinds in between with great flexibility. a beautiful blend of Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery and his own, which makes it better....

The guy has some music that is truly modern classical music on guitar, and the guy isnt even a show off.

Yes! Saw Holdsworth not too long ago. Fripp is one of my all time faves and Bill Connors is an undiscovered gem.

I'd love to see Holdsworth's recent tour with Tony Levin, Terry Bozzio & Mastelotto!! I saw Holdsworth with UK with Bruford in the late 70's!! Excellent Indeed!! :thmbsp:

Al Di Meola

Give a listen to "Race With Devil On Spanish Highway".
You may conclude that Al Di Meola is the best and an uncannily-skilled guitarist.

haven't seem anyone mention Randy Rhodes. I saw him in england in 1980. AMAZING!!!!!! check him out (with ozzy).
Live hendrix. live at winterland or atlanta 1970. unreal.

living, Trey Anastacio. unbelivable tone.

of course, Jeff Beck.

:D:yes:

Keith Richards
Joe Walsh
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Link Wray

Just on the top of my head, which I'm tired. Just got home from work. I'm sure there are many more.

There really is no "Best" merely Favorites or fantastically gifted musicians, but Ill throw in from the guitarists I have seen perform live.

Acoustic: Leo Kottke
Electric: Alan Holdsworth
Both: Richard Thompson

Other guitarists that were truly impressive:
Robert Fripp
John McLaughlin
Larry Coryell
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Jeff Beck
Henry Kaiser
Buddy Guy
Eric Clapton
Pete Townshend
John Renbourn

I'm sure there are others I am forgetting, but hey, I'm getting old. :music:

There is no greatest as stated, so I'll throw a few more that have not been mentioned:

Michael Schenker; UFO's "Force It" LP could knock your house to the ground if played too loud!

Frank Gambale; Smoking Fusion Guitarist a product of Chick Corea's Elektric Band

Scott Henderson; Another Superb Fusion Guitarist and Corea sideman and the main man behind Tribal Tech

I saw Richard Thompson last Fall at a small theater in Pittsburgh, Phil Ochs opened for him (he was actually wonderful too) but Richard just blew that room away - solo acoustic sounded like a full blown orchestra! It was such a pleasure to be in the room with him. He's top of my list too.

There are too many disparate styles to call any one guitarist the best. Most influential? That would be an easier call to make.
One guy who can trade licks with the most accomplished blues, jazz and rock guitarists is Eric Gales.
