Who is the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll"?

If the Yeah Yeah Yeahs chick can be considered queen after a single moderately successful album (song, really), then Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine deserves a shout.

Personally, I think the title in question should more so be the result of a body of work than current popularity. I'd think the "Queen" would have at least three albums in her career... Maybe a certain level of respect in the industry? :dunno:

She's more relevant than most mentioned in this thread, that's for sure. This thread is depressing...is the state of rock and roll really that desolate for women?

Very possibly - my favorite female performers don't qualify as rock and roll; more like "adult alternative contemporary" :-P If one's definition would stretch that far, I'd vote for Patty Larkin. www.pattylarkin.com. Try this one,e.g., it's about Suzanne Vega (who isn't really rock and roll either...) :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyUErnnQoOc

I like(d) Ann Wilson and Sheryl Crow... but neither is really a very good singer - Crow's voice is very thin (almost always double-tracked or otherwise enhanced on her recordings) and her ability to find and hold pitch seems kind of limited; Ann got really screechy when she let go; in the mid-1970s she seemed pretty good, but she really didn't have any competition. Heart was, in retrospect, really nothing more - or less - than Led Zeppelin with different plumbing :-(

Jen Trynin might have made it to royalty status if she hadn't quit the biz after one album (she was in the right place at the wrong time).

As far as the female rocker who has had the most impact on my musical tastes:

hersh.jpg

Kristin Hersh, of Throwing Muses and 50 Foot Wave, plus solo work

Her memoir Rat Girl, about the year Throwing Muses signed to 4AD Records and recorded their debut album, while she became a single mother and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, is a fantastic read.

But, I guess she isn't widely known enough to be the Queen.

Hey Mystic,

Thanks for posting the Epica "contestant" Simone Simons. I checked her out. She's definitely got chops and looks well suited for metal. I like a lot of the northern European metal. She'd make a good queen for King Diamond.

Lady bow-wow may have talent but, it's hidden behind all that extreme crap used for media recognition. :boring:

I have to vote for the Wilson sisters. Yeah, both of them!

I personally believe that Tina Turner, Patti Labelle, Patty Smyth, Pat Benetar, Suzi Quattro, Madonna, and yes... even Lady Gaga, would be good choices. After all, why does there only have to be one queen? Why not: so and so is "A Queen of Rock 'n' Roll"? How about Cher? Bonnie Tyler? How about Amy Weinhouse (?spelling)? Now with Miley Cyrus or Kim Petras, they could very well be "A Princess of Rock 'n' Roll" or perhaps better: "up and coming queen of Rock 'n' Roll" :D

I think one of the things that is really important is that they are an entertainer that performs original stuff, be it self-written or written for them. :)

Artistic integrity, vocal ability, stage presence, creativity, musical talent, broad appeal, #1 hits, life experience, and a general lack of association with Billy Ray Cyrus.

And talent. Did I mention talent? I guess I did...

That's pretty harsh.... :nono: Why does being associated with Billy Ray Cyrus ban someone from being "Queen"? How about Lady Gaga then (as the Yahoo article about her was the reason for the thread)? :scratch2:

I wonder what the criteria are for the title of Queen. I like the nomination of Stevie Nicks. Who's the King?

Precisely! The original Yahoo article did not mention any criteria. :thmbsp: I think this criteria must include that the individual is a diva of some note... It is, however, abundantly clear that as far as Tchuck is concerned (see above) that on of the caveats has to be that this "Queen" have no association with Billy Ray Cyrus. :D

Have you heard her? Dear lord, she even sounds dumb when she talks, prior to even singing. She's a manufactured musical abomination, talented at crass self promotion through the Disney propaganda machine but not a rock star (and this is coming from somebody who actually appreciates Lady GaGa in small doses).

Perhaps... Miley is not one of my favorites. To you're question, probably... although I am not sure which song your referring to. My 10 year old niece is absolutely in love with her. But that is more of the Disney version, than real life. Coming into her home, it is hard not to hear Miley Cyrus. I think, the image she projects to young girls like my niece, is sweet and wholesome, and this innocence is a good thing as there is so much terribleness out in the world. :music:

Besides, didn't Disney drop her? :scratch2:

It seems that few posters even know what Rock 'n' Roll is or how it differs from all of the genres that you're talking about here.

Well sh*t, I can't meet that requirement. All comments are retracted until they are worthy.

Can an opinion be worthy?:scratch2:
