Who listens to their tunes with the LOUDNESS on?

Back in high school I used to have the loudness on and the tone controls maxed out. Good thing I didn't have an EQ. Today I'll use it occasionally for low level listening.

Pretty-much "on" all the time but it also depends on the music being played. Rock, funk, electronic/dance, most jazz, and blues with a strong beat -- on; acoustic and classical -- off. And generally "off" when the volume control is past 2 o'clock. I also use the BBE 462 in conjunction with the loudness switch and this provides a lot of tailoring possibilities. The key is... sound that is not distorted and whatever makes you happy.

You mean like my Cerwin Vega VS-100's? I believe they are 95 db, plenty effecient, and yet i still like my loudness on. I think its all about preference.

You just owned me. Yeah Id say its all preference. Do you think the loudness is different-sounding on certain receivers. Personally, I dont like it.

Yeah, i believe thats true. With the loudness switch on, on my Pioneer SX-980, its still very musical sounding, but the bass is deeper, not thumpy or booming. And it doesnt drown the mids or highs either. It has the perfect mix. Now, on your system, i may not like the loudness switch on. Like i said, all about preference my friend.

By the way, great taste in speakers. Im on the lookout for some older HED model Vega's.

Why thank you. Yeah i guess gear combination can determine how the loudness will sound. BTW I have HED U-103s and they are like a more accurate D-3. But they have to be placed in corners to sound their best. Very touchy speakers.

Your welcome. Believe it or not, those are the exact model HED speakers im looking for! I love the look of those. I own another pair of Cerwin Vega's, the RE-25's, and i have 4 VE5M bookshelves, which two arent being used as of now.

I go with flat tone controls, no EQ, and never use a LOUDNESS setting. Didn't use the loudness control much back in the day either, just kept upgrading the amp + speakers, and running flat.

RE 25s are pretty nice. They have a really smooth sound and the bass is pretty low. And the VE-5ms are a very loud little speaker. I was going to pick some up on ebay for a computer system.

Yeah, even though the RE's are newer than the VS series, i like the RE's more. They have a more detailed sound, and stronger bass than the VS series. How come you didnt pick the VE5M's up for your computer?

Because a pair of D3s came up real cheap :P So now i run 2 pairs of speakers for front (D3 and 280SE)

Ah, i see. I would of went that route as well. The VE5M's would make a hell of a computer speaker though. I never thought about that.

Yeah. They have the loud for when ya need them, They are magnetically shielded if you still have a CRT screen, and they dont take alot of power to run well. Small amp and your ready to go!

Yeah, i may just shoot for that soon. I have a pair of these sitting around, practically brand new collecting dust, so i may just try them out for the computer.
