Why are speaker stands so expensive?.

I was looking for a speaker stand that wasnt a round tubular pole or long and thin I was looking to something that looked like a tall black rectangle that are about the with of the speaker.

I was also looking for short speaker stands that would look/work nicely with the Electrophonic "bookshelf" speakers which sound better when closer/on the floor but every stand I see Is either too espensive or too scary looking!
I mean they look like thet wont hold the speakers when somebody walks across the floor!

It's either that or just keep both sets of speakers stacked

CL best place for stands

Keep an eye on CL for people getting rid of speaker stands. I have never purchased a pair "new" at a store. Sanus makes good quality (relatively) low cost platform-type stands, and I've grabbed several pairs off CL for $25 - 30 a pair. Search all of CL not just electronics section. Check "free" section , too.

I've actually got my Kg4s on a pair similar to these.

Got woodworking tools and/or skills? Make your own and you won't have to worry about it! :D If not, I know what you mean. They are typically a little pricey. Check out thrift stores, too, as they come up with them on occasion. Also, yard sales. I found a pair last weekend for a buck.

I made some very sturdy speaker stands from restaurant table pedestals purchased from a restaurant supply store. The hollow tube can be cut to any length and it can be filled! Mine must weigh 70lb ea with lead shot in them. I took out the adjustable leg pads and put in spikes.

Second Twenty20's idea, it works great, and they are also easily painted any colour you wish. Various blocks and stone stuff can serve as stands, many different sizes and shapes to choose from. I think cinder blocks are around $2-$4 bucks each ?

Good luck,
Mike

Check Parts Express. They carry a variety of different types and if you can catch when they have free shipping you can get em fairly resonable.

I have seen plenty at the thrifts.

Otherwise, power tools are your friends. You can put together a beauty set of stands in no time. That is an easy project that requires only elementary tools.

Check out some of the home decorating stores.. or places like Michael's... some outdoor stores too.. I've seen some really cool plaster Greek style columns and similar for about $25 to $30 each.. They come unpainted, so you can do your thing with them.. even some of the plastic ones can be filled with sand... They would give you a nice high end look..

All the speaker stands (5-6 pairs), I own were given to me. I've never bought a pair. So I'm not familiar with how much they cost.

If you're looking for an 8" boost, I had great luck using the concrete blocks shaped like truncated pyramids that they sell for laying wooden deck beams. I covered them with a can of that faux-granite spray paint and affixed the speakers with blu-tack.

Getting the AR-2ax just that far off the floor did wonders for the bass and got the tweeters just that much closer to ear level. A great value for $20.

If you don't care if they look a little ugly, This doesn't sound like anything some PVC pipe , two flanges and some black spray paint can't solve.

I guess you can weigh down dead bodies with those! I saw it in a movie once! :D

Alot of stands are expensive because they are designed to be as sturdy as possible.

I had a pair of sound anchors that my dad now owns. Phenomenal quality stuff. Stupid $$ though LOL.

Learn to weld man, you could dup. those stands for peanuts.
