i have a pair of br 12 yamaha speakers rated at 97 db.
i hooked them up..dont laugh..to the earphone jack of my
portable dvd player...not a lot of volume there..but no hiss
or distortion..its 1/8 to 1/4 connection...
question is .will this hurt my speakers..there is very very little current moving here.? and you ask why do this.
because its there and possible..

No, it won't hurt the speakers, but as you found out it won't work very well either trying to drive them with a line level output only.

Needs an amp.

Nope. But it will probably sound terrible, due to the impedance mismatch...(I would think that the headphone jack can drive high impedance cans)

So, get yourself an amp, wire up your DVD player, and enjoy.
