Will your flannel shirt go up in flames?

Well, my dad's did today.

He was wearing a t-shirt under a flannel, under a quilted flannel. When he bent over to turn off his propane heater, the corner of his outer shirt touched the heating element and was immediately engulfed in flames.

He ran out of the garage and put the fire out with the hose. He was flown to a burn center and it looks pretty bad.

They say he will be there for three weeks and needs surgery.

Way to start the new year.

CHECK YOUR CLOTHES.

Guess I'll have to subscribe so I can fix that. Why don't subscriptions auto renew any more?

I hope that his injuries are merely superficial, perhaps a scar that will give him a reason to tell a story when someone asks about it.

I recall when I was younger, they really hammered in the idea that if/when you catch on fire, don't go running around looking for something to put the fire out, simply Stop, Drop, and Roll.

Jeez, Louise... That's awful.I dunno-Have you or his doctors talked to the Shriners, or is he too old for that ? Look, keep us informed, in any case...

Wow. That is terrible . I hope he recovers sooner than later. Burn recovery is very painful.

Wow that is awful. 3 weeks in the burn center certainly suggests some serious burns. Hope and prayers for successful surgery and full recovery.

Damn man! That does suck donkey balls. Here's hoping the initial assessment was overly harsh and his injuries aren't that bad.

But a timely warning to us all to be careful this winter. As we move into the workshops and garages with the woodstoves and propane/oil/diesel/whateveburners things can and do go south quickly.

Good Karma sent to California Rob. Probly won't help much but it's about all I can do.

I thought stop drop and roll too, but he is 79 and that may not have turned out so well. Also, there is no room in his shop/garage for that.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, and for editing the title for me.

The latest update is he is sleeping due to the pain meds. Cleaning the burned areas was tough on him. I've heard that can be very painful.
I have not seen him yet but my mother is with him. She said to wait until the weekend to come up.

My parents live in Bodega Bay, which has no medical facilities near by, so due to the extent of the burns they flew him to the Firefighters Burn Institute Regional Burn Center in Sacramento.

I hope your dad gets better without going through too much pain. Let him know that we're thinking about him and wishing him the best.

So sorry to hear about your dad. I know, from a similar experience in my youth, how painful that is.
