Wire gauge question...

What gauge speaker wire would be adequate for an old pair of Marantz HD's hooked to a Yamaha R-900? The speakers would only be 6 or 8 feet from the receiver. Sorry for such an easy newbie question!

BTW, even though most of you probably already know of it, here is a great site for speaker wire and lots of other smallish electronic stuff;

Yeah, I think #18 would most likely be fine.
I tend to go with #14 but that's just me. I've got #12 fine stranded on a couple pairs of speakers, the only catch is that the speaker terminals on most vintage gear usually won't accept wire that large. I've had to use the #14 slot on my strippers to cut off a few strands. :sigh:
Some have said they think solid wire works better and the logic is sound (a thread from about a month ago). I'd be tempted to try some #14 Romex (solid house construction wire) and nip off the ground wire. Maybe an experiment for another day.
