The wife is wanting to rearrange the house to the point where rear speaker placement is virtually impossible to do-vaulted ceiling/finished lower level.

Do any of you have experience with wireless speaker adapters and/or wireless speakers? I would prefer an adapter so I can use my existing speakers. My concerns are sound, reliability and interference with wireless networks and wireless phones etc. Will they work with the YPAO setup on my Yamaha receiver? What kind of volume levels can you achieve?

I'm putting this out there, not as a recommendation but as what was available. About 10 years ago I purchased from Radio Shack a rear speaker amplifier designed for this very purpose. It had a small transmitter with line and speaker level inputs and a receiver/amplifier with about 15 watts per channel. Worked, but wasn't the greatest, and it always annoyed me that the rear amp had to be turned on manually. It was all analog, BTW. I ended up giving it to my son to take to college to listen to music on his phone.

Now I find myself in the same situation, trying to set up rear speakers in a NYC apartment. Running wires is not an option.
 
Manual adjustment would be a deal breaker for me. If I turn up the receiver volume, I want all the speakers to turn up with it.
 
That would be dependent on how you hook it up. If you use your speaker or preamp outputs, the volume control on the receiver will control the rears. In fact, with almost all equipment, it would be difficult to connect it any other way.
 
Nothing is impossible. Is this your house or do you rent? If it is yours then a little drywall work and some paint can get the wires any place you need them to be.
 
Looks like the JBL WEM-1 will do this. A little expensive though. It lists power output as 50W/channel, but with no qualifying THD or frequency response.

Wonder if something could be hacked with a bluetooth transmitter/receiver.
