Would any speakers from Best Buy be a big improvement over 15 yr old Infinity SM 185?

ML ESL's start at ~$2500 a pair. If the employee discount lets you get a pair for $300, I'm coming out of retirement and going to work for BB.:D

The Martin Logan Motion Series are considerably less expensive. They are not electrostatic but cone type speakers with Heil type (Folded Motion) tweeters.

Check the link for the least expensive ML ESL's BB sells.

Also, are Martin Logan Motions a lot better than the Pioneer AJs?

My $0.02 worth is... Get a new receiver.

Something with at least HDMI 2.0 and decoders for lossless digital audio formats like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio or maybe even Dolby ATMOS.

With most new (inexpensive) BluRay players having only HDMI outs you are setting yourself up for having to cobble together your HT set-up.

Just like when building a new house, a solid foundation is a MUST. An AVR is the foundation of a solid HT system, build around it, not "in spite" of it. :thmbsp:

IMO they are better. Bear in mind they cost considerably more. I have a pair of the Pioneer BS21's w/a Monoprice 8" subwoofer in my bedroom. Consider that a vote for the Pioneer BS22's which are better than the BS21's.

This is something I agree with.

Maybe you should get your reciever first and build the speakers around that.BB seems to have some good recievers might make the speaker selection a bit easier.

Pony up $25 for a subscription here on ak. That'll leave you $275 to find some speakers that'll best your infinitys on bartertown. Be patient and do your homework. If you buy brand new speakers and get them home and decide you don't like them you're going to take a HUGE hit. That's not the case with used if you're an informed buyer and buy them right.

Awesome, thx. Why not two towers up front and bookshelfs in back? What sub would you pair w it? Is it cheaper to buy as a set?

Since you are leaning toward a home theater setup, there is probably not much to gain by using the towers up front and they cost twice as much. If they fit in the budget, go ahead and get them as they will have a little better bottom end. Might be better for music but you probably would not see much improvement with movies. As for a sub, the 8" Pioneer is not bad at all. For about the same $ you could consider the 10" Polk PSW10. Parts express has a couple budget subs but of course they are not available through BestBuy.

BB sells B&W. Why not take CM9/CM5/CMC2 setup? Or if money is tight, 683/685/CMC2 ? Both will be a huge improvement. Do not forget subwoofer too.

The Andrew Jones Pioneer speakers get my vote.

The main reason to switch to a newer receiver would be for the HDMI inputs and switching. Blu-ray players have a coax or optical output for audio and an HDMI output for video/audio.

Agreed.

There are a few threads around on improving them even more for little expenditure. Google them.

BTW: I use Polk in my HT setup (Monitor 70's maybe?) and they are very good.

On a budget, you will be hard pressed to do better than the Pioneer speakers by Andrew Jones. If you get 4 bookshelves, a center and a sub, the retail would be around $500. If your discount gets you within your budget, go for it.

On another forum someone said Sony's Core series are even better than the Pioneer AJ's. Is that true?

Honestly Don't know As I haven't set foot in a Best Buy.. for years and then only to see the insides.
Why would some one hunt for serious Audio gear at a Big Box store?

And why would someone post in a thread where they clearly haven't read the the OPs clearly stated reasons :nono:

Because he's "bare" which is short for "barely" as in...

barely has any social skills.
barely has any class.
barely understands things.

(bare, just messin with you :D. but seriously, is this the best use of your time?)

Except in this case, I'm guessing a Best Buy employee in good standing could find a way to return the speakers if not to his liking without taking a substantial hit, if any at all. Not all of us have that option.
