X-202-B Phono Stage

Decided to rest the 800-c and put the X-202-B front and center. What a wonderful unit!! The circuit to the tuner works perfectly, the AUX is clear, quiet, and powerful. However, when I tried the phono, it doesn't have the gain. I have to crank the volume knob to the max to get it to play loud, and only comfortably so.

The only caps that haven't been changed by Clippy or me are the 4 buried beneath the phono tubes. There is no hum or other noise (other than some static that I traced to another tube.) And, the volume is the same in both phono circuits. Changing out the phono tubes changed nothing.

The phono source didn't change: same MM cartridge that played in the 800-c. Difference in volume level between the two units is substantial. Any thoughts?

DOH!!!! What a maroon!!!. It was a "12 o'clock." Much, much better set to "MAX." I guess I gotta spend a little more time reading the manual and fiddling with the controls!!

Thanks Dave.

And what a relief that I don't have to mess with the phono caps just yet.

Now back to Coltrane :D

Me too! I guess this man Was Too Much In A Hurry!!

This is one fine piece, for sure. And all JJ's in there. Sometime later I'll swap in some decent tubes and track down the static. For now I'm going to enjoy it :thmbsp:

The static is the wife in the background yelling "TURN THAT CRAP DOWN". :D

Man, the volume control got exercised today! Between my wife and kids who were in one volume camp, and me in the other, the carbon traces on the pot sure got a workout :D

Before shutting her down, found another gremlin: the center (red) jewel seems to have a short somewhere. It stays on very dimly when the center channel control is off. I traced it to the contacts right at the bulbs. Too tired to remove the knobs, face plate, etc. to investigate further. Maybe later when/if it really ends up buggin' me.

Anyways, 12 straight hours and nothing major popped up. Except, of course, that doofus move I pulled with the Low Level Control.

Couldn't be happier :D

Well, chalk up one more "man in too much of a hurry" issue! The red center channel lamp is supposed to stay on dim whenever the unit is turned on, but the center channel switch is turned off. That way, it acts as a power indicator to let you know that the unit is turned on. Then, with the center channel level control turned on, it comes up to full brightness to let you know that the center channel has been activated.

Time to get an Owner's Manual!! :)

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! What's really funny here is that I have one! Just haven't read through it as one should. Now I'm forewarned to read up on the FM-200-B before I open my trap about the Micro Tune feature  :D

Too funny, sounds very much like myself.

I need to find an owners manual for my X202B.

Changing the phono caps in that selector switch assembly in the X-202-B is not for the faint of heart.

Can we assume you know the original meaning of T.G.I.F. when learning how to put on shoes???

THAT'S why I was so thrilled I was just being a doofus!

fisher x202 volume control does not work please help!

Hi everyone, the volume control on my fisher x 202b does not work, the strange thing is that when turn the volume to the lowest level it get louder! and at maximum volume the volume gets lower! Does anyone has picture of the volume control wiring real up close so I can see which wire goes where , when I got this amp many years at sale the previous owner has disconnected all the wires from volume control terminals. I have the service manal all wires were connected back per the service manual schematics but its till no go! The other thing is the center channel volume control light bulb stays faintly lit all the time , even with center channel volume in off position. The 2x 40uf/450v caps of the one multi sec electrolytic cap was replaced with new ones but this did not solve the problem! The unit sound so awesome but the only way I can lower the volume is by using the line level inputs at the back of the unit which is not really practical thing, did someone had the same problem and how they fix it?! the 100k volume pot as mentioned above was taken apart and cleaned from inside, the tapers inside and metal contacts in the volume are in great condition. As mentioned if some has the real upclose pic of the wiring going to the each terminal on the volume pot it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Sikander
