Understand McIntosh (Jim Ludoviconi) has announced the launch of the XR200 3-Way Loudspeakers. Orders are being accepted now and priced at US$8k (per piece/pair? - this needs verification).

Initial specs are:

Speakers: 7 tweeters, 12 Mids and 3 (8") Woofers!
Frequency Response - 20Hz to 45KHz (wow)!
Dimensions: 51 3/4" (H) x 11" (W) x 11 1/2" (D).
Weighs: 113 lbs

Will the C22 + MC75 60th Anniversary combo be able to drive this pair of speakers amply? Hmmmmm :scratch2:

Or would a pair of MC275 (mono'ed) be needed to drive the 3-8 incher woofers leaving the MC72's to power the mid/highs ???

Ron C, any advise?

I am dreaming of this combo right now ... :D

The XR200 has captured my curiosity, as well. I couldn't help but notice the two MC1.2Kw amps connected to the XR200's in the CES photos. What is the maximum rated power for this speaker? Will the MC501's make this speaker come alive? What would be the minimum amplifier power suggested for the XR200?

MC501's would work great. MC1.2KW's even better.

Guys, Ron answered the same questions from me earlier this evening, and he said that two monoblocked 275's would probably work, but definitely 501's. Also, I believe that price is $8K each... Ted.

Dan,

If you are thinking of getting the XR200, keep the current pair of MC501's and ADD one more pair to bi-amp. More cost effective and think it would be as good (if not better) as driving with one pair of MC1.2KW's. :thmbsp: Of course, 2 pairs of MC1.2KW's would be another story altogether. :D

Then your EB1i's could be your 3rd system perhaps? :D

Cheers! :thmbsp:

At $8k a pair would be a steal ... More likely to be $16k ...

Jerry.......I'm not replacing the PMC EB1i speakers in my main system. I like them way to much to make any changes there. I'm thinking that the XR200's would be great in my studio system.

OK!

Still, plans for the XR200 should be nice!

I am planning .... IF I can spare the cash! :thmbsp:

Think I will wait for your review first! After all, think you will beat me to this gear! :D

Cheers!

Jerry, one of these days McIntosh will hopefully come out with speakers packaged with an active crossover so that people can truly appreciate what "active" bi and tri amping really means. They would also get to sell so many more amps!

So when are you going to visit Serge? ;)

Even jmajma is coming soon from France.

Serge,

U are absolutely right.:thmbsp: I really have no idea what is the true performance of bi-amp or tri-amping as its all passive.:music:

I really look forward to the day when this happen. Then, maybe I will realise what I have been enjoying all these while could reached another level of performance altogether.:D :thmbsp:

Cheers!

Looking forward to visiting, hopefully this spring now??? :scratch2:

But on the subject of tri-amping imagine if each one of your triple stack amps would only see the signal they were responsible for? Instead of all of them seeing the same full range signal and wasting their power into the passive crossovers in the speakers as heat for the audio band they are not responsible for??? :thmbsp:

Active bi-amping is the primary reason live performances have the incredible dynamics, and clarity they have. Those woofer stacks all have seperate amps for each driver, and are fed the exact frequencies they have been designed to reproduce. All of those stacked compression driver/horn combinations each have individual amps feeding them with their exact frequency requirements. All amplifiers are being fed from, and being controlled by active crossovers. The sound engineers spend a great deal of time adjusting levels for a perfect balance between the high and low frequency drivers. The end results are the awesome dynamics, freedom from distortion, and performance levels rarely seen in home systems.

Absolutely.

Hello Dan and others, isn't this the same as active high-end speakers such as the Meridians? The DSP7200 and DSP8000 advertise that they have four individual amplifiers to match each speaker exactly? What do you think of this approach?
