Here I go again with my Yamaha questions...........:boring:

I have learnt that anything with a 40 ending, except the 2040 has an UNOPTANIUM part?

Is the CR-820 the most desirable? And why?

I should know by know ha?!

I just picked up a CR-640, $30, seems to power up, lights and turner don't work. Since it's a "40" does that mean it's not worth fixing?

I do not feel qualified to answer that question but I have read here that the CR series ending in 40 have a part that is not made anymore....Except the 2040 like I hav stated before....

I also do not know if your model is included. I am sure someone will shed light on this, so do not give up yet....

When you power up that 640 do you hear a click from the protection relay? If not there are two possibilities; either a power amp module or a pre-driver module has blown. Up until recently the pre-driver was not available as it was OEM'd by Yamaha from Sanyo. However, there was a post here recently by an AK member who had successfully substituted an STK3062 or STK3082 to replace the pre driver. Now these modules actually contain two drivers so they would need to be mounted on a small PC board and wired to the sockets of the IG02950 pre drivers. I imagine that if you were to search on those two STK numbers you can find the thread. I have not tried this so cannot say how well it works.

I have a CR-800, and if given a chance at an 840 or up at a reasonable price I would seriously consider without hesitation about unobtainium. Hopefully the unobtainium lemmings will be scared away and keep prices down.

If it's working after all these years it's worth the risk to get a different version. I like their looks and the specs.

Vintage is sometimes such a crapshoot anyway, unobtainium would be the least of my worries. Just move on to the next opportunity ...
