Yamaha CA-610 vs Marantz 2238B

Just out of curiosity -- is the amp in fact a CA-610 or is it a CA-610II? The latter, in the US anyway, is certainly more common. Indeed, I've never seen nor heard an unsuffixed CA-610... but it's a safe bet that it's a good sounding amplifier. I've been satisfied with my CA-610II since 1978 (listening to it now, in fact).

It is a CA-610, which seems to be the European or at least a non-US version.

I do really like the sound of the Yam. It's truthful, honest and doesn't varnish the sound overly. But damn those Marantz receivers are pretty!

You just stated it. Marantz is gonna 'varnish the sound' compared to that Yammie you have.
Yes, I just bought one. It is a beaut. After I figure out the problem in the left channel, gonna see how it sounds. I have the Yamaha CR-1020, it sure sound clear and detailed even though it needs alot of work.
Got an IDEA!!! Gut the Marantz and put all the parts from your Yammie into it!

I'd not trade each for the other and would suggest just springing for the Marantz if a decent price and compare them side by side and you decide. If you do not like the Marantz and you did not overpay them you should get most of your money back. I hace the 610II combo, in fact 2 od the CAs and though nice there is a lot out there much better that is in the sub $100 range which is where the 610II pair generally reside.
My father has a CA-610 very rather low hours on it and it sounds very good. Last year I bought him a CA-810 to make up another system and after a bit of re-capping and such I thought it was a definite step up from the 610. I'm really not sure how you'd compare it to a Marantz 2238B as they're very different. Both sound very nice, but I'd say the Yammie is quite a bit more accurate. If I wanted the music playing and I wasn't completely concentrating on the listening I might prefer the 2238B. For really accurate reproduction I'd say the 610 would be better. Depends quite a bit on the speakers you're running as well.
