Yamaha CR-2020 damaged in shipping

Ok, now don't get too worried! It's not as bad as the title looks.. I just wanted to make it a little more dramatic. Ok but on to the story...

So I finally received my Yamaha CR-2020 from UPS and although it was well-packed, it suffered slight damage. The AM antenna from the back completely snapped off and it's a large chunk so I don't get any AM reception whatsoever. I was wondering if there's a way to replace it/fix it/work around the issue. Thanks everyone.

If anyone wants a picture of the damage.. I'll post it up on request.

P.S. For anyone who wants to know beyond the damage story, the unit was extremely dirty. I went through several Windexed paper towels and q-tips and the face looks a little better. I'm gonna have to clean the the wood and the insides. Whenever its on, you can smell the dust/dirt that's burning. The Right channel sounds distant. The knobs are scratchy of course. And as far as I know thats pretty much all that's wrong with it. A good friend of mine who frequents this forum, zenith2134, and I are gonna take a look at it together and diagnose whatever else is wrong with it and see how much we can get done on Thursday. I'll start some sort of follow-up portion on this thread, possibly with pictures of what's getting done.

Yep, Thursday's a go. Should be a fun project. Gonna do the usual cleaning and tune up stuff, like the idle bias and check for measurable dc on the outputs. Also, a unit that dirty will need a tuner cleanout and all the boards cleaned.

How about a before and after kind of thing? Those are the best in an audio thread.

:worthless before and after that would be nice my 2020 and my 1020 luckily only needed minor cleanig and detail work

Ok.. Here are a few exterior pics.. No nudies as I'm too lazy to do it right now, but definitely Thursday. Here are some "teasers" I guess you could say. Pictures include whole receiver shots, angled shots, some close ups of battle scars, the back, and the poor broken AM antenna.

Well I never listen to AM...

BUT, you could use some JB weld after you reconnect the bar?
I considered using crazy glue, but would it bring back reception? I notice that aside from the bar, there seems to be some sort of copper wiring around the lead-like bar and some sort of welds that were broken.

You could always find a replacement... I have a feeling that if you aren't 100% original with original parts that it will still sound good and not very expensive.
Just totally take off the broken one.

Yeah, that's another thing I considered. I posted on the classifieds for one from any receiver. This one looks like is at the point of no return. Thanks for the advice. :thmbsp:

What AM do you like to listen to?
Honestly it isn't a real big blow to me. I just pretty much listen to the baseball games on AM, but more often I listen to 1010 WINS, which is a radio news station in New York. I got into it thanks to my old man.. I perfer listening to that than watching the news on TV, for nostalgic reasons I suppose.

When we break the unit open Thursday, I'll see if its possible to maybe reconnect the wires leading to the AM bar antenna. Bet it'll still pull 1010 wins without it, but I know how it feels to just want the unit 100% intact. As long as the wires haven't fallen back inside the antenna we can do it. Krazy Glue or JBWeld would hold it on just fine.

You could glue it back together for appearances sake, then use an external antenna for actual AM listening.

Disconnect all the wires (red, green, black, blue and yellow), undo the two screws and take off the whole mounting bracket. A pair of strong pliers will compress the feed through grommet. Put all the pieces in a small box and PM me for my address. I have already resurrected half a dozen of these antennae, one more should not be hard.

Follow Up!!!!

Ok, so my friend, zenith 2134 are here, jammin to The Cars at the moment. We've got everything cleaned out. Everything sounds great. The DC is a bit buggy, nothing severe enough to worry about. Wow, WHAT A SOUND!

Pics of the process...

Yep we stripped that thing down to the bone . It sounds incredible at this point......need to get my hands on a 2020 (or 3020!!!! but that isn't likely in the cards for me).

Kinda funny how I'm looking down at the unit in that last pic....wonder what I was thinking. This was when we were just about ready to button 'er up for good. :thmbsp:
