Yamaha CR-620 Channel Problem

Hi all! I just picked up a Yamaha CR-620 and I noticed that once I power it on, all the sound comes out of the right channel only. Usually if I turn the volume up really high, the left comes back and works like normal but then can cut out again. I have no clue on what it can be. I saw on some sites that recapping would fix that (which I’ll have to look up what that really means). Also I’ll have to check solder joints for any lose ones. I also saw that the transistors on this go out often.

I’m fairly new to electronics (I’m 17) and I’m wanting to dive deeper into fixing and restoring pieces of art like this. Also I’m going to spray some DeOxit into the potentiometers to get the crackle out when I turn the knobs. Also what are some things I should check out? Not quite sure on the checking process.
Thanks y’all!

May be a combination of a dirty volume control and pitted/fouled relay contacts. Next time it cuts out. Instead of messing with the volume control. tap on the relay and listen for SQ changes. That will help eliminate possibilities.

Slide switches are usually troublesome in these older CR's ie. Input select switch is one.. These really need to be disassembled to be properly " deoxit'd" ie. cleaned.

same type of switch..as your input select switch.

Thanks for the welcome and reply! I have no clue on what I’m diving into and I probably need to do more research about electronics. Hoping I’ll get the hang of it soon. Gotta start somewhere.

Gotta start somewhere.
Download the service manual from hifiengine, need to register to prove you are not a robot, safe/no spam.
Get a basic understanding of the various board/stages (phono/pre/power amp/power supply) while it looks daunting it's not.
Flow is from left to right, start at the RCA connectors.

Loacate speaker protection relay
tap on the relay and listen for SQ changes.
Use something non-conductive like a chopstick...
