Yamaha CR 840 v 1040

I had this in the vintage section but it was suggested i ask it here.

I picked up a beautiful Yamaha CR 840 from the original owner with box packing and manual. Works great but the light are out. I am very impressed with the sound and I have owned some hgh end gear and lots of it and this holds its own
I had a CR 1040 in college in 1980 for about 3 days until I woke up and realized I had NO bussiness taking out a loan to buy omething like that. After a hundred amps, receivers and so on that one still stands out in my mind. I do remember that it was very powerful and had a smooth almost 3 D soundstage.

My question is forgetting about features and the 20 watt per channel difference would there be sonic any reason to get a 1040 over a 840?? In other words does anyone own both and have you compared them.

I am pretty sensitive to the differences in amps and receivers from a sound standpoint and I know everyones systems and ears are different.. I also am running cables and powercords such as Analysis Plus Oval 9 and AP Copper IC along with VH Audio Powercords which helps.

you know these have a unobtainable predriver chip? right? save your money and enjoy the 840. I am doing the same with a 1040.

Merrylander posted a preventative measure of adding a heat sink to that chip.

I grew up about 40 something miles from Chicago and had a lot of stations very close to each other, I chose the 840 because of it's selectivity and to this day I think it has a really great tuner for a middle of the line receiver...great features and sound too. I think it's a great unit for people that still love FM.
