Yamaha DVD-S1700: Wont read DVD-R

I have a Yamaha DVD-S1700 CD/DVD/DVD-Audio/SACD player that now won't read DVD-R discs that I burn. It is only about a year old and doesn't have that many hours on it. Recently I tried burning a DVD-Audio disc (Maxell DVD-R) and it stops after playing a few tracks. I burned another disc and it stops at a different track. I then burned a DVD (with 24/96 audio) and it 'skips' in several places. I tried these same discs on other players and they all play fine. Other discs I have burned (same brand and type) still play OK, as do "store bought" SACDs.

It seems like the player is too new to need the laser messed with. I will try cleaning the lense first, and then if that doesn't help, I could possibly replace the DVD drive (DV-342FV) or the pick-up assembly (SF-HD62). But my question is would it be worth the trouble. Am I going to be able to fix it and will it last for more than a year? Or is the Yamaha a POS and I should just move on to a different player?

Try the same disc on a +R disc and see if that works for you. I have seen some players that play back + and - R fine and some which only play one of the 2 types of blank media.

Try cleaning the lens first. But other than that, resign yourself to the absolute fact that DVD lasers are totally disposable and short lived devices. I cannot even begin to count how many I used to replace under warranty. Many with 400-600 hours on them.

This stuff is absolute crap. A $29 player today will last just as long as a $5000 player.

If it doesn't clean up, buy the cheapest player you can find. It'll last just as well.

Before you try anything inside the Yamaha, try burning another DVD with the same files, this time burn the disk at the slowest burning speed you have available to you. Burn at 1x or 2x and see if that disk will read. The slower it burns the longer and deeper each pit burns the better the chance of the disk being read by other players.

I always burn at the lowest speed. I'm anal that way....

I'll try cleaning the lense this weekend. If that doesn't work, Ill order a new pick-up assemby. They are cheap enough (less than $20). Searching the web, I see that a common complaint with the S1700 is that it plays "pristine" discs great, but not anything that isn't perfect. So maybe I'm beating a dead horse. But discs that don't play on it play perfectly on other systems, so it isn't right. I'll either fix it or trash it. I'm not gonna play the "need the right disc type from the right manufacturer" game.
Jeeze, my cassette deck worked for thirty years. This thing is a year old. Progress?
