Yamaha r-1000

I have a yamaha r-1000 100 w per channel.I just picked up a pair of energy 5.1a floor speakers that sound great. Problem is if I crank it up near half volume it will suddenly stop the sound. I can reset it by holding power button until I hear the click. Any thoughts on why this keeps happening? Thanks to all-

Firstly, welcome to Audiokarma. I would suggest having a mod move this to the general audio forum, as it's much more likelyfor peopleto see it there. You can just click report on your own post, and ask a mod to move it. I was unable to find your speakers googling energy 5.1a, unless they were part of a boxed surround system. I was trying to check the specs of them. The Yamaha you have is only rated for 8ohm or higher speakers

So assuming you're only running one set of speakers, and without being able to verify speaker specs, I'd hazard a guess that your speakers are possibly less than 8 ohms, or on the "difficult to drive" side of the scale. Unfortunately not having a 4 ohm rating means the power supply in the amplifier isn't the best. Boosted bass or use of loudness functions, and/or high volume and you can quickly run out of power, even with a rated 100W.

Also I am running a set of pioneer cs-g11 floorstanders as well.Just never had this problem with the pioneers and any other set together.

If you are running both sets at the same time, on just about any receiver you will definitely have issues. Only run one at a time. The Pioneer CS-911 are 8 Ohm speakers, and likely much more efficient, meaning they need less volume knob and power to reach the same volume as the Energy. The Energy speakers are 6 ohm rated, and likely less efficient as well, causing them to take much more power to reach the same volume as a more efficient, 8 ohm rated speaker. Technically the receiver should not be used to power the Energy speakers at all. If you do, it will cause more heat build up, and possible shutdown or damage. I ran into the same issue trying to power a set of "6 ohm" speakers on an amplifier that claimed it could run 4 Ohm speakers. When pushing them at louder volumes, the heat built up and it opened the speaker relay, cutting the sound. Put my 8 ohm speakers back on and haven't had any problems since, at any volume level. Another thing that makes speakers confusing is the manufacturer picks what impedance they are rated at. Some 6 Ohm speakers are relatively easy to drive with high efficiency (90Db) + and a relatively steady impedance that doesn't dip below 5 Ohms, and most amplifiers would have no problem with them. Some others like my electrostats are rated at 6 Ohms, and are inefficient at only 86Db efficiency, but they would kill most amplifiers as they also have an impedance dip that hits only 1.1 Ohms. Most amps cannot safely drive them. Sorry if I got a little too deep into it or if it is confusing. Unfortunately speaker and amplifier specs are deep, convoluted, and confusing at first. It took me a while to figure it all out. I just don't like giving blanket statements, "like any amp that claims it can drive 4 Ohm speakers, can drive any 4 Ohm speakers". Unfortunately that advice does show up from time to time.

Thank you so much for the info-Everything I read about these energy speakers said 8ohms so I bought them for $50. It makes sense if they are truly 6ohm.I had to make some small repairs so looks like they are for sale-

Also I should mention I have a pair of polk sda-2 that were hooked up to the yamaha r-1000 and they worked great. They are 4 ohm speakers. I moved them to another room last year and one of them didn’t have any sound after that. I read somewhere that moving them can cause damage. I still have them if anyone has any suggestions on a fix. I AM new here and this place is great!
