Yamaha R8 Receiver

Hello everyone. Hope you don't mind answering a question for a first time poster.

I have a Yamaha R-8 receiver in excellent condition, sound-wise and appearance. I am original and sole owner and haven't used it very much at all. Comes with owner's manual and remote control. Just tried remote yesterday for the first time ever to see if it worked. It did! Unbelievably, it controls volume via a motor which rotates the volume control knob.

[Edited by Moderator]have absolutely no idea what it may be worth[Edited by Moderator]. Is there a "Kelly Blue Book" for vintage stereo equipment? Thanks.

Welcome, sort of. Do your own research of value and you will be properly rewarded.

Yes, I want to do my on research. I am hoping for some tips on how to get started. I don't see any Y R-8's on ebay or Craig's List.

Well, thanks anyway.

Make sure you tick the 'Completed Listings' search tab on EBay. You might also want to search for R-7 and R-9, and extrapolate.

You should add your location to your profile - might be a Yamaha fan close to you to help a bit better...:D

Those R- series Yamahas tend have a problem with the channel memory - they don't remember the preset stations. I assume that since you are original owner this is probably not an issue but if you don't use it much, you might want to check.

Right, I never used the preset. All of the lights work because I went through them when checking the remote.

Will do. Thanks.

R-9

I have the R-9, which powers a set of klipsch icon rf 28, they sound sweet, with it. the R-8 is similar to the R-9. Found it at a flea market for $40.00, better sounding than my new denon receiver which cost alot more. old stuff rules.

Yamaha R9 was the only receiver I ever purchased new. It sounds great. It can drive a set of Infinity Q3's easily and sounds great. I purchased a second one from ebay as a spare. In mint condition a R8 is probably worth about $80. In fact I bought one for a friend for $80.

r-8 yamaha

Just found one on Craigslist, for $30.00, was selling as an "R-B",young kid. well worth it. i think everything is the same as the R-9 as i have that one too.

My results matching Yamaha w/Klipsch were much different. I tried Heresies and Fortes with both R-9 and CR-800 and way too bright and fatiguing. When paired with a Sansui AU-517 and an Onkyo TX-4500 Mk, the Klipsch sounded much more balanced and listenable. I know everyone`s ears are different and I just wanted to mention this so there wouldn`t be a potential disappointment for anyone looking at a Yammy R-series receiver. i`ve had mine since new and have heard many different speakers matched to it. ADS and DCMs were particularly nice with the Yammy.

Btw, IMO both the R8 and R9 fly well under the radar. :smoke:

When I sold Klipsch speakers I found they sounded a lot better with H/K than Yamaha as far as mid price electronics was concerned. This was a couple of years after the R-9.

I know, old thread......one has been sitting in my local thrift since the weekend for $26. I was almost tempted. With a discount I would get it for $20.
I had a not properly functioning R 9 briefly once upon a time. As far as build the R 9 is a tank. The R 8 is easily half the build quality.

(I have a nice CR 2040 that has been in the rotation non stop for 5 years)

If you have a use for it, $20 is a great price. It’s not a great seller (obviously) so nothing to pick up for a flip.

That's the problem. I do not need it. I am only playing like Lamar Jackson.........:D
