Yamaha stack from my younger years.

Greetings everyone, new member here. I don’t necessarily like joining a forum just for advice, but according to the internet reviews this is a friendly place, so here I am. :beerchug:

I started putting my Yamaha stereo together when I was still a teenager in 1983. What I have is a C-80, T-80, GE-60, M-60, M-80 and a dbx 120X. I’d have to look at the receipts, but I think the last piece was bought in 1987 and was probably the CDX-900U. I originally had the CD-1, but I don’t know where it ended up. It’s all cabled together with Monster Cables from that era as well.

The dbx allowed me to use the M-80 to drive two woofer enclosures that each had two 15” woofers and use the M-60 to drive a pair of EPI 2400(2 driven 12”woofers) speakers. At the time it was a pretty powerful setup. :D

I still have all the receipts and owners manuals for the pieces, but I got tired of dragging the boxes around with me at some point over the last 40 years.

Here’s where I’m looking for advice. How desirable is this old equipment and what would be the value of the whole stack, just how it sits.
Anyway, any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Here are some photos. It’s a little dusty, but it would clean up nicely. It’s honestly been used very little in relative terms.

ETA: I no longer have the woofer enclosures with the four 15s and the EPIs need to have the foam replaced. I have the foam kit and the speakers don’t have to go with the stereo.

If the stuff still is working is another plus. By now those amplifiers probably have a nasty glue damage issues.

Looks like I screwed up a little bit with where I posted this thread.

I planned on cleaning the pieces up and testing it to see if it all, or any of it, works. I don’t know what glue damage. Everything worked fine the last time I turned it on in 2003. :rflmao:

I suppose I’m just trying to figure out if it’s worth my time and if there’s interest in these old pieces.

While AK is a great resource of information it is not an appraisal site nor does it offer appraisal service. Any replies you get will be other members guestimating.

Some other things to think about:

Your best bet is to check completed listings for each model on sites such as Ebay, Reverb, Hifishark and then subtract out seller fees etc;

What someone might pay in say a large market like SF, NYC, CHI could be totally different from say smaller cities in less larger metro areas so don't get your hopes up based on the prices you find.

I can't see that packaging (correctly & securely) & shipping, that whole stack let alone insuring it would be worth your effort as you'll be responsible for the items arriving undamaged even if one of the major carriers damages it.

You would also be responsible for describing working/non working condition of each unit exactly if not sellers can file a claim saying item not as described

So that leads you to having to sell locally and more likely then not folks will want to come to your home to test and more then likely try to nickel & dime you, offer trades etc.

What I'm getting at is it's not that cut & dried as to value or what is this worth financially or time wise

What ever you do- don't use the EPI speakers you posted. The surrounds are cracking- playing them even for a brief time could ruin the woofers. The foam surrounds can be replaced plenty of advice on how to do it.

The brown crap around those centralized components.. Dried glue that promotes corrosion on anything metallic it comes into contact with.
Like capacitor , resistor , transistor , diode & jumper leads. As well as the copper buss bars , etc. Sometimes its so bad that the leads integrity is compromised. Even damaging solder pads on the other side of the board.

Thanks, I did put in the OP that the foam was toast and I have the foam kits.

Glue damage is certainly possible, but don't overthink it. If it's there the amp will go into protection. If it's not, you are fine. If you want to take it's temperature so to speak follow the first post in this thread.

Hello. I'll assume the nasty glue is still in there. Instead of mentioning $ figures I'll just recommend NOT activating the class A buttons on the M-60 and M-80 amps at all. They are on borrowed time. You'll get more $ selling them in working condition. That class A button is a grenade pin eager to put the amps in protection mode. Protection mode = much less $ for you. I wouldn't listen to them much in the interim. Recommend either servicing or selling soon.

That looks like a fun system, I'd love to see it with the 15" woofers in it's glory. I'm a sucker for matching components, I wonder what the matching turntable is?

Selling a full stack can be a hassle, there will be a lot of low-ballers just wanting a piece or two but it definately has some decent value, plus it would take you forever to put the full set together. My neighbor had similar EPIs in his basement, he loved them (they also needed to be refoamed) but moved them on before I could get my hands on them. Refoaming is fairly easy but read all the threads, if you don't center them properly, you'll get coil rub.

I'm surprised you moth-balled such a beautiful system, I have to be surrounded by audio equipment, I'm always pulling out a radio. Good luck, it would be a shame if that wasn't used on a regular basis.
