Oh boy oh boy!!
Just got home from work, takin' the ol' Roxer out & gettin' her fed, and then checked the email.
I won an eBay for a pair of JBL LE25-4 tweets!!
They look good in the pix, and will complete the ol' L100 Century project.
I really think the HPM tweets sound better than I remember the LE25, but I ended up with the desire to get them back to about original. The woofers are 2213 pro drivers, but very similar to the D123A (which I have bought, but are missing in transit). They have been expertly reconed, but they used foam surrounds and black cones :(
They sound terrific. The mids are a newer JBL polypropylene model, and they are a very nice, smooth, solid mid.
Best thing, I've lost auctions for LE25's with a much higher bid!
$40 for the pair.

Hey, Tom, do I still need to call 'em FrankenCentury's after the LE25's go in? :dunno: :D :D

Well, half-a-dozen of the speaker pairs are for the HT, but I did forget to include the 4 powered and one passive subwoofers.

That's another great thing about AK--they're quite a few guys that have more speakers than I have! ;)
I have also collected a fair number of drivers, woofers to tweets, that are at least as good as the drivers in my better speaker systems.
I've been pondering some projects, and actually one somewhere in progress. Xovers are wired, one cabinet was ready, but I'm pondering a change to use the HPM-100 woofers, which would mean some enlarging of the baffle cutouts.

Well, if you've got black woofers, I think you've still got some "Franken-somethings." ;)

Still, those woofers ought to get the job done pretty well! :p:

Here is the original complement of the L100A -- the ones most of us are familiar with, with the midrange offset to the right of center:

Woofer: 123A-1 (JBL says replace with 2213H if unavailable.)
Midrange: LE5-2 (JBL says replace with LE5-10 if unavailable.)
Tweeter: LE25 (JBL says replace with 035TiA if unavailable.)

What the heck are you using for a midrange? Seems I recall it's a "new" driver, not "vintage" at all -- correct? That kinda scares me a bit, as it could be miles away from the original LE5-2. The L100 has a very "minimal" crossover network -- though I don't comprehend it expertly, you can consider that the drivers may well be running virtually "full range," with the network not really controlling them much at all in regards to "rolling them off" when it "rolls in the next driver" as such. So, that would essentially make the frequency range and the characteristic sound of any given driver considerably more important than those would be with more extensive crossover networks.

Obviously, I'm always gonna be in favor of getting the real original drives in the things! Still, I'm sure it's always fun to "experiment!" :p:

Yes the mids are 'newer', since Harman took over. They are a 5-inch poly-cone driver, and I just cannot remember the model number, and I don't wanna pull 'em. They really cover the mid freqs very well, very smooth, open, and do a super job with the chick vocalists (I love chick vocalists, being the ol' reprobate I am).
The 2213 recones look expertly done, I still have one extra, and the sound, well jeez, Tom, you know how those ol' JBL's sound!

I tried a week or two ago to score a pair of 035's, just put an esnipe bid, and left it at that. Guy beat me with the old-fashioned ebay bid demon. Dang.
I think the LE25's went so 'cheap' was 'cause they ended Friday mid-afternoon?
The foam looked in fine condition, but one tweet has a tiny dimple in the dustcap? Oops, if that's a dome-type ...

Oh, hey, the 2213's fit VERY snugly, once I got them situated, they were not coming out again easily :D

But, I WANT MY D123A-1's!!! C'mon post office guys, FIND them.

The 035's would need some kind of "baffle modification" in order to use them -- I for one would be chicken to attempt such a thing. They definitely wouldn't just "screw right in."

The LE25's are plain old cone tweeters, so that's a "dust cap" in the middle. I always get a kick out of the old "doesn't affect the sound" on the eBay auctions -- heck, I have seen actual DOME tweeters absolutely TRASHED and RUINED, with that same "dimple in the dust cap doesn't affect the sound" line. Crimony!!

Anyway, I'm a little skeptical about any dust cap dimples not affecting the sound -- if the things vibrate, they make sound. Still, though, you're probably talking about some minute difference in dispersion on-axis from the dimple, or something like that -- if it DOES affect the sound, I'd agree that it's so minute we'd never know the difference! :p:
 
I have some superb tweeter drivers here, but they all would have required my doing 'something' for any to fit properly.
Any thought of 'doing something' to those lovely cabinets went out the door when I first got a look at them!
So we've been trying to restore them to their original glory, albeit with what I think is an upgraded mid ...
I will need to make a frame for a grill cover. Keeps dog noses away from the private parts, eh?
Right now I've got 'em running from the G-9700. They sound fine, just great with the TT and vinyl, listening the way things were 30 years ago. Heck, seems like I spent a lot of time in basements listening to stereos then, too!

I still hope they find my great whites,
