After much effort and generosity from fellow Ak'ers I have got my BA A40 Series II's going. The anticipation of hearing two good speakers damn near killed me. It was worth the effort. These things sound really nice. Much better than the DIY (frankenstien) speakers I had on my bookshelf above my work/computer bench. Thanks to Justen for the original acquisition and Crotalus and Brainsmasher for the parts I needed. Now with some new foams I'll have the Series I's going, where to put them :scratch2: . Anybody stack small bookshelf speakers?

Hey, stack 'em and try it out, might be something better than either one alone.
 
A great little speaker, and nice to hear. I stacked my A-40's for awhile on some large Essex towers (great bass but not much else). Together, they sounded very, very nice, with the Essex filling out the missing low end of the A-40's well.

Glad you got them going... lord knows you need more functioning speakers!
 
Best of luck with them. I'm a fan myself. I've easily tripled my time spent listening to music since I've aquired mine.

Oh, and Brainsmasher is one hell of a swell AKer, I agree. Wish we could clone him and stack him! The world would be a neater place for our efforts! :thmbsp:

Have you bought surrounds for the A40's yet? Looking at MAT Electronics I see 6" surrounds but BA calls them 6.5" woofers. Some Ebay sellers claim to sell the 6.5" A40 surrounds but I cannot tell if they are just 6" or a custom size?

I have refoamed the series II A40's. I had to trim the OD down to fit. The series I looked like it would fit without ant modifications. I used the foams from MAT.

Glassman,

If you are foaming the series II speakers, I found that the old glue was a PITA to get off and that the white glue most use makes the job difficult. I used contact cement. You must be deliberate in your actions and make sure everything is just right because there is no forgiveness.

I bought a set of Series I from Wank here on AK and I want to refoam the original woofers. It is a long story but I have some refoamed woofers for them right now but they are from 1985 where as the originals date the speakers to somewhere around 1983. Also, the design of the woofers is a little different so I want to bring the A40's back to original. I ordered some of the 6" surrounds from MAT today. Thanks for the tip on the glue. What made the white glue so hard to use? I removed the old surrounds from the A150 woofers and used the white glue to attach the new foam and did not seem to encounter any problems.

I just couldn't get the white glue to stick and the surround kept pealing up. That and I got a bit impatient with the residual glue left over and wnet ahead with the contact cement. I was trying to make the area perfect and realized that I was making more of it than I needed to.
