Zilch's AK Design Collaborative - Econowave Speaker

No measurements yet, either, as I'm building up new E'Wave PC boards with switchable sensitivity for prototypes right now, but I may sneak in a curve or two later today. Mine are the 1.5" throat version, so it's gonna be BMS 4555, 2435HPL, or JBL 2452H-SL the drivers. :dunno:
I look forward to seeing what they can do. And what they'll look like built up. I'm sure with your supply you'll cook up something tasty. :D
 
Zilch has shown us that the little guy will work down near 1k with the driver being more often the limitation than the lens.
Despite several E'Wavers having verified my contention that the "standard" waveguide outperforms many older horn designs, including substantially larger ones, and the general consensus that it significantly challenges most everyone's preconceptions as to how well E'Wave might actually perform, there remains a perception that E'Waves and E'Wavers are weenies.

I figured I would just put the 2.6 mH coil where the 1.5 mh Erse went, but there is a slight size difference in size! I may have to mount them on their own board.
I have the PE stock ERSE I-Cores in inductances from 1.0 to 3.5 mH, and they are all the same physical size and mounting configuration, and fit the PC boards exactly.

In addition, ERSE direct, also an AK sponsor, offers them in a wider array of values, including 2.7 mH:

They further offer a similar selection in 16 Ga., with even lower DCRs. The mounting is different, but the overall size appears to be similar:

If the big horns perform anywhere near as good as the little guy's spec wise.... I'm in!

There is just something inherent in the sound of a larger horn, that is quite attractive to listen to, (I hope these live up)

I assumed that in the 4430 clone crossover the resistance of the coil was important, it was the one you spec'd in the "4430 help!" thread. The 15 ga 2.7 is 32 bucks now for crying out loud!

It does matter, of course; that's a beautiful inductor and air core is best if we can find one that works for rational money. Look at the inductors Westlake uses in their crossovers, for example. No way can i afford that action.

The ERSE I-Cores we use in these AK projects are a compromise in the interest of economy. The stock 4430 uses an iron core; I don't know if we know the DCR of that one, but it's easy enough to determine. I do recall measuring it at the time, with the intent of approximating the stock inductor DCR.

Since, I've mostly used the ERSE 16 Ga. Super-Q with 2235H, which likes to be controlled by a high damping factor and minimal series resistance. The DCR of that one is 0.163 Ohms at 2.7 mH.... :thmbsp:

I think you are missing something. I'm 6'1" with a wingspan of 76" finger-tip-to-finger-tip. That would be my mounting configuration. That doesn't address the width involved within my total girth. I also happen to have a 32" waist, which might make me a 1.0 mH coil (if I were an inductive coil). A 2.7 mH coil, wound with the same wire gauge on the same bobbin, will be fatter in the middle. That can cause problems on an existing circuit board when the choke is too fat to clear other pieces and parts already there.

I was just responding to your statement that they are all the same size. Looking at your photo proves they aren't. The 1.0 and 1.5 are the same size around the midsection (at least part of it), but the 2.0 has an additional layer of winding, and the 3.5 has at least two of them, making both of them wider in the middle. My comment wasn't meant to be taken from the perspective of a custom PCB that will accept the outer parameters of chokes of any value made within said outer parameters.

As you can see, I'm a newbie to this site, and tonight was my first visit to this incredibly long thread, so I started at page last. My apologies if I have rubbed you or anyone else in a wrong way. :wave:

That "air" would be a bit concerning to me. Driver based anomaly or is that something inherent in the horn?

Looks kind of like a lush, effortless altec curve with lots of pronounced midrange and recessed highend before that big peak at the end. ;)
 
I'm sure with a little work on the compensation network, it'll end up nice and flat outside of maybe that peak at the end. It's high enough to maybe not be of any worry to most of us.

That's a vintage Model 19 passive XO, which I usually grab for initial testing of unknown CD systems as opposed to working out custom comp for each one. It's adjustable, but limited to ~10 dB of HF comp, max. That gets me to something listenable, typically, and tells me what I need to do, in this case, 4 -5 dB more "boost" with this driver, to get the system playing flat. I'll try BMS, which usually requires less, next. :thmbsp:

There are answers to the SSC "air" thing; I'm thinking and working them through. The simplest solution is to EQ them flat off-axis, as I have approximated here, and not toe them in, or toe them in Geddes extremely, as-is. Another approach would be to replicate the characteristic on- vs. off-axis behavior of a perfed screen with a grille, as described in the tech note.

I don't hear it, BTW, but that doesn't necessarily mean others wouldn't; we're looking at 5 dB at 20 kHz on-axis, but diminishingly less below there.... :dunno:

9"x17" (will need an adapter for a 1" thread on horn.)

I think these would retrofit nicely into an L300 or L200 cabinet :D

Wayne's observation more fundamentally relates to ideal drivers on ideal CD horns/waveguides; each combination of real-word components must be evaluated individually and adjusted to provide optimum performance.

EconoWave is indeed a versatile development platform, and Jack and I have enthusiastically encouraged experimentation beyond the "standard" design documented here. That's part of the fun, of course, but it's best to start with what we have developed, and over 30 members have now successfully built, as a baseline reference for any such endeavors.... :thmbsp:

Got yu, yes the rough FR does concern me a bit to go spending money on these things,
but as you say that is just a first try and does look promising, I'm following with interest.
 
looks like the "air" is in the horn. it's not cd.

the design is to compensate for inherent high frequency spreading that occurs as sound passes through a screen.

i'm not suggesting that without a screen it all turns to poo, but...it's not cd.
