I started working on this set last night and found that there were wires that were not connected to anything under the chassis...the ends looked burned and corroded...this must be the problem. Also there were two black widow spiders in here...Yikes! One was in the 6BK4 cage and another behind the tuner. Some Raid finished them off though. Always be careful reaching into these old sets.
typical rca problem. Wires burn and corrode, break apart etc. As you probably know, rca used a few wire wound resistors to drop the B+ for the various stages and those termial strips and wires would burn to a crisp! I hate that! Nice set!
I got this set working yesterday, problems included:
-broken wire to 6BK4 cathode
-another burned b+ wire
-6BK4 tube filament appeared burned out
-6JE6 tube lit but was non-functional
-Bad connection to horizontal oscillator plate supply at circuit board
-picture was very blurry like low HV and the AGC was getting excessive horizontal pulses...adjusting the focus control fixed these problems.
-Chroma would not lock in, adjusting the piston trimmer capacitor and a coil got it to come in.
It now has a pretty good picture but the flyback feels hot...I adjusted the horizontal efficiency for minimum cathode current but it still seems kind of hot.
