I guess it depends on what one considers valuable. I am not here to socialize or dicuss music, mainly assist...

Stumped Harman Kardon 730 right channel

Do the pokey pokey with a wooden chopstick on all the solder connections and see if the sound comes back......I recapped a Yamaha CR-620 and lost a channel and the chopstick trick found a poor solder joint I didn't do properly. Took me about 20 mins to find it. It is a place to start anyway.

    Pioneer PL-71 tonearm issue

Desolder the tonearm wires and attach a fishing line (to pull the wires back through when finished). Pull them out far enough to see if the pin can be repaired or if you need a new connector. i have installed a doner connector from a parts table and in other instances just added pin connectors...

Alley Find speakers - Altec 887A Capri

Continuing the theme of cool speakers for next to nothing.......its moving day in the neighborhood. Found 6 white shelves in great condition steps from my garage. I 2 hours I had a set of custom speaker stands at an 8 degree upward angle. Cost me 6 drywall screws and 2 hours of fun.

What unfinished project(s) eat at you?

I am a nut job so when I pick up a project I am 100% obsessed with finishing it in a single sitting. Having to order and wait for parts to arrive is torturous.

Alley Find speakers - Altec 887A Capri

Found these guys in the alley. One was missing a grill and the other had been abused with 2 bashed in corners. I grabbed them. Checked the drivers and all checked out. One woofer needed to be reglued the other was perfectly fine. I sanded down the real wood cabinets and rebuilt the...

How your gear looks ... does it really matter?

All of the above aside from brand name. I am not a fanboy of a brand name. When I was a noob I lusted after the 3 brand names, but as I serviced / collected more gear I am more inclined to avoid it.

    Dual 12XX Head/sled Replacement?

Depends on budget. You cold pop a AT3600 on for $30, AT95E for $80, or go upmarket. The AT95E has a Conical stylus option you could buy to use on rougher vinyl for $20ish dollars and have the green elliptical for nice vinyl and the blue one for ok records. It just pops on and off and you add a...

    Dual 12XX Head/sled Replacement?

Be careful sliding it back in as there is a ground connection to the tonearm that is quite short. Just pivot it and slide it back behind the copper grounding tang into the slots. While it is out it would be a great chance to hit it with a little metal polish and clean off the black oxide. Clean...

    Vintage system recommendation for daughter

For an apartment setting 20W is plenty with some efficient speakers. Trying not to go too bass heavy. Bose 301 with a lower maintenance Dual ...506 turntable, and pick any nice looking receiver. I would suggest yamaha CA-200 to 600 or HK. I just did a Fisher 202 that sounds great, so no need...
