Alley Find speakers - Altec 887A Capri

Found these guys in the alley. One was missing a grill and the other had been abused with 2 bashed in corners.



I grabbed them.

Checked the drivers and all checked out. One woofer needed to be reglued the other was perfectly fine.

I sanded down the real wood cabinets and rebuilt the corners with baking soda and super glue.....filed and sanded them square added veneer and stained them in walnut.

The grill cloth I had leftover from a set of Leak 600s I did last year.

Tested the caps 6UF and cleaned the attenuators.....the original caps tested perfectly fine, but I added a small value bypass cap to each to feel like I did something.

I had to manufacture a grill with some spare 1/4 birch ply....threw on the cloth and put them all back together.

Compared to similar speakers like the AR 2,3,4 or Dynacos I actually prefer the sound of these. I only use "era speakers for era music" and vintage blues music.

Cost out of my pocket.....3 or 4 dollars and odds and ends I already had around. Saved from the dump.

Congrats as they're great little speakers, owning two pairs myself. I run them next to some big competition (Cornwall 3) and they actually hold their own!

Continuing the theme of cool speakers for next to nothing.......its moving day in the neighborhood. Found 6 white shelves in great condition steps from my garage. I 2 hours I had a set of custom speaker stands at an 8 degree upward angle.

Cost me 6 drywall screws and 2 hours of fun.
