It comes from just doing it so often. Once you get the hang of what does what, and how to tweek things the time it takes to set up the test equipment takes longer than working on it by ear. There are times, when you get into the demultiplexing stage of FM or an actual transmitter where you do need the test equipment, but too many people get stuck in a rut and end up making things far more difficult and involved than they need to.

Geez you frigging nailed it by saying 'you can do it in your sleep'.. I've followed your threads pretty closely when they appear.. I'd follow your lead as I always pick up tid bits of info.
Your lead on the tuning of SS amps is pretty good to even for a novice, too but refreshed my memory on the tuner caps and slight adjustments etc. saved me hours of dicking around.

Yes, but FM has some dynamic compression that when "expanded", yields a near flat response curve across frequencies.
When dealing with tape, cassette especially, the tape itself is actually a limiting factor. It can only contain a certain quantity of signal, and has to share space with the bias oscillator. The tape is a 5kilo bag and it will not hold 10 kilo of audio and oscillator. This affects the output and audio filtration choices.
The recording bias is primarily used for the energy transfer to the tape while recording, and is less a factor in the playback, but you can still usually hear that difference when playing a tape back and switching over the course of a song between standard, Chrome and Metal. It is just the physics of our universe. -
