I think I've learned which control setting matters with the AR-5's- the speaker mid-range. I ran the JJ 12AX7's with the mid controls at 7:30 which sounded balanced, but the JJ's simply produced too much distortion. I switched back to the NP Mullard 12AX7's and set the mid controls at 4:30.
Making the AR-5's sound right is finding that spot where the mid controls work. Too little mid, and the AR's sound mushy. Too much, they offend. The NP Mullards sound much cleaner, as long as I don't crank the mids too high, the sound is good.
