2009 Chicago-Area AK Get Together - February 28

Hey Robie,

I'd like to attend again this year with +1 if that's ok. I brought some Klipsch Heresy's that went over pretty good last year.

This year I can bring some Klipsch RB-75's.

Thanks,
Scott.

Chicago-Area Get Together

Date: Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 1 PM

Address: PM me for location and directions. If you provide an e-mail address, I can send them via e-mail.

Hosts: Bob (“Robie”) and wife, Colette

Spouses/Others: Other adults are welcome.

Start Time: 1 PM or so.

End Time: Last year it was 9 PM or so.

Chili: I will have a large pot of Chili available about 5 PM.

What to Bring?:
  • Appetizer: Bring an appetizer/snack to share.
  • Beverages: Bring a beverage of choice. I will have coolers and ice. I’ll also have coffee.
  • Equipment: This is my private house and with big attendance we may be in somewhat tight quarters. We’ll try to hear it all but based on previous years; the emphasis will be on socializing.
  • Music: Bring software (i.e. CDs and LPs).
How’s it all going to work? Based on previous years, more than 50% of the time will be devoted to socializing. I will have 2-3 rooms where system set up can occur but they are not that well isolated from one another.

Tribute to Sleddogman51: We’ll have a moment of silence for Ken around 2 PM. I have contacted his mother to let her know.

What equipment will be available?: Check my signature below for a list of equipment, most of which will be available. I also have a big selection of tools and audio gizmos. The following will definitely be available:

  • Turntables: Rega Planar 2 with Denon DL103 low output moving coil cartridge. I also have a Denon passive transformer/step up device that converts low output MC cartridges to high output phono level. I also have a Rotel RP-1000 with Grado 8MX moving magnet cartridge.
  • CD sources: Rega Planet and highly regarded Radio Shack CD-3400 portable CD player.
  • Speaker Cables: Naim NACA5 (spades and bananas) and several 12’ lengths of Royal Cable terminated with pins and/or bananas.
  • Interconnects: 2 sets of Chord Cobra, 5 sets of Monster Interlink 300Mk2 and 5 sets of Monster Interlink 100.
  • Speaker Stands: I only have one set of 16” stands. I will try to arrange to have another set available.

I am looking forward to seeing all of you!

Thanks for the update, Bob. As I've been threatening, I'll bring the turntable and electronics and associated cabling. It sounds as though it may be a good idea to bring a rack; I have a fairly hefty 4-shelf homemade one I can bring. Do you have a couple of shelves or stands to put under the amps to keep them off the carpet? Each is approx. 11"W x 24"D. If not I do.

I have some recently acquired stellar vinyl. I'll be playing them here for the open house the week before and will try to bring some to your gig.

Shelving and racks would be a welcome component for the basement system, Brian. If you check the pics from last year, we were using transport boxes for shelving last year.

Looking forward to it.

Bob, I could stop at Costco on my way up to your place and buy some pizzas, if you like. The big ones, right ?

Would love to come, but I have to help my friend move that day. She took the buyout package from Chrysler and is moving back to Michigan.

I just finished restoring a Sansui 881 (for a friend) that I will bring for demo. Sounds very nice. See pic.

Thanks for the reminder Fred. I've been talking to him recently and he's been to the previous two. Lots of "for sures" have been contacting me as "sorries." But, hey, life sometimes gets in the way.

Hadn't thought about posting a list of potential AK attendees but will do so if there's interest expressed here.

Looks like as of this morning...I'm in. :thmbsp:

Swapped a PM or 2 with Bob and I'll be bringing some OBU single driver ML TQWT's to play with.

I'll also have a KLH 24 system that would like a new home if anyone's interested.

Maybe I can dig up something else interesting to put in the truck just in case.

ML TQWT - Mass Loaded Tapered Quarter Wave Tube, a transmission line variation.

OBU - Operational But Ugly. They're not done, just working.

I'm bringing some jazz albums like the one below.

Hey Clyde and Ed, how about bringing one or two of your best jazz records, and we will setup a little break-out session to listen to some jazz.

Should be a blast. Mark (aka Snade)

Will do. :thmbsp:
Got a couple of other things I'd like to share as well.

Brian, Just to confirm, are you bringing the Atma-Sphere gear? I have recently taken a shine to otl's.
I wonder why :D

Yes indeed, I'll be there with all the goodies. Have been rolling some 6SN7s in the preamp and amps lately and am bringing the small Kuzma turntable as well.

I am hoping to bring a pair of Bogen mono blocks as well (if I get the one I've had at the tech back by Friday). Anybody bringing some efficient speakers?
