To the Technics bashers...

This is the most liberal and accepting group around. Thank God for AK. Here, no one is treated as second class.

Agreed. Elitist garbage is what I came here to escape. I love all vintage gear and love to read the musings of those who have had more experiences with the respective brands they know far better than I.

I have a mint SA-5370, and when I compared it to a Kenwood KR-4070, the Kenwood cut a swath right through it. Older caps? Maybe, but am I really going to spend the time recapping a Technics?

(If anyone is near Hamilton, Ontario, and wants it, message me and we'll see what we can do.)

I'd love to get my hands on an SL-1200, since it seems to have become a legendary turntable. I also suspect there's nothing wrong with their CD players, but I won't go out of my way to own another one. The 5370 was pretty disappointing, though, especially since it's in such great shape (go figure).

Try a SLP 990 one day . in my opinion a very special CDP

AK47: I do not think I was underhandedly caustic at all. I said I thought that the original poster was overstating his case. I haven't noticed any anti Technics feeling here, though as I said straightforwardly, I don't care for much of their electronics myself (I also don't like the tuning knob on Marantzes -- hope that doesn't make me a bad person).
I do think that there is a good deal of pushback against the SL 1200, not because it is a bad machine -- its a fine one -- but its a result of belt and idler drive true believers disagreeing with the direct drive true believers' (especially 1200 true believers') claims. These disagreements can be heated, but I don't think they are anti Technics anymore than they are anti Dual or anti AR or Linn. Its just people arguing for what they think is the best system for turntables.
But when a thread is started claiming that there is a bias against something, I think the claim has to be supported with more than just the stuff isn't paid as much attention as other makes. Its obvious that the Marantz and Pioneer lovers are very active here, and Sansui and Kenwood lovers also, but does the fact that there are few Krell or Meridian posts mean that there is a bias against them? I don't think so.

In most forums on the Internet some single company or set of equipment gets a bruising and over time the unsuitablity of this same equipment takes on urban legend proportions. People need something to agree on in the negative I guess. On AK and elsewhere (although AK is king) Technics seems to have fallen victim to this phenomenon...

I picked up a gorgeous Yamaha CR1020 receiver the other day - mint of course, and hooked it up to my regular system for a try out. I'll post pics later. Then hooked up Akai AA1200 to do a side by side test. The Akai has never done well on my Angstrom speakers - too much bass and forget about the loudness switch -the speakers just want to pop out and the whole thing sounds like ass. So...out come the Kabuki Sansui XP's.

I know these aren't the best speakers around but the 120wpc Akai makes 'em work - the setup rocks, clear and tight - loudness switch in and the sliding glass doors start to rattle. But most importantly the sound is GOOD - phono or CD. This Akai just needs the right speakers.

So next I unpacked the 125wpc Technics SA-800...center the control knobs - nice resistance and tactile feel, each knob is even after all these years and 1000's of hours of play time. (I'm first owner from '78) Hook up the XP's, the Angstroms too, next the phono and the Nakamichi CD deck and an FM dipole. Volume down and....contact. All lights and LEDS looking good - give Madonna a whack on her big behind - and turn up the big knob. Magic - kickass magic - hit the acoustic control (tone defeat for bass/mid/treb and 2 boost switches) and roll on some tone controls. Yeah the little engineers at Matsushita knew what they were doing. Acoustic control off and hit the loudness switch - roll the power to 4 - sliding doors start to open by themselves. What about the sound at this volume? SOLID, punchy, clear, no hint of distortion, fun to listen to. Turn down the volume a bit and click over to the Angstroms - beautiful sound. Puts the Akai in it's place.

All of this out of mint 30 year old equipment that would look classy on ANY high-end audio showroom shelf. Sorry Technics bashers - All I have to say is that I guess you've never heard the good stuff.

You think Technics gets Bashed, have you seen how bad Bose gets it here!!

Haven't owned any Technics receivers or amps, but the first tuner I ever bought, an ST-7600 in 1977, was very good. I've always liked Technics turntables -- still have an SL-D3 bought in 1980. Judging from all the responses to this thread, it appears the manufacturer has more than its share of backers.

I've recently gotten re-married and moved, so I've not been watching AK much. I was happy to stumble onto this thread as I've defended Technics from bashers before; on other sites more than here. My first "real" receiver was a Technics SA-303, bought new back when. Still have it and still dig it out every now and then. Since that point, I've collected over 250 vintage receivers; many of which my new wife says have to be thinned; but it won't be the Technics. My three best Technics are the SA-5760, SA-800 and a mint black faced SA-1000 which I bought 3 years ago. With the number of pieces I've got I don't listen to any one very often, but when I get out a Technics, it works and sounds great. And I've got a Panasonic transistor radio I bought in 1967 that I can't kill. I think a lot of it is how it's been stored over the last 30-40 years. (the woman I bought the SA-1000 from, just found the original owners manual this week and is going to drop it in the mail. Yeah!)

I didn't know that there were any Technics Bashers.

They always made pretty good stuff, I thought. Perhaps their speakers weren't of great renown, but their receivers, tape decks and turntables are all held in high regard...

Personally, I love the SA-5X60 and 5X70 series of receivers. As I've often mentioned, there's a particular "Technics Stink" that goes with them that I'm fond of, and I mean that in a good way. I can plug my 5470 in and that odor fills the room and it takes me back to being 14 again. :D

Black faced SA-1000? Picture please!!

I have a 5460 and noticed that too. Any idea what causes it??

Hey Badger, if your avitar is a photo of your new partner, congratulations! You have great taste in women and vintage gear. Please post a pic of the black SA 1000, I just got a black faced SU 8600 and thought that was a real deal.....never even considered they made the black monster also! Super, Chuck

Thanks. My wife will be pleased you like her vintage 70's pic. I'll try to post photos of the SA-1000 later today. It's in storage here at work, along with 99% of everything else, but I can get to it to take some kind of shot.

I picked up an SA-5560 recently to keep my SA-5470 company, but she's needing a good cleaning and I don't have any Deoxit in house; ordered some from PE this week. While I would love to own either the SA-5760 or SA-5770, I don't expect either to come along cheap. I'm fine owning the 85 watt model in the 5x60 line. I also have an SA-800 still in its shipping box that I'm not going to take for a test drive until I'm able to give it a good bath as well.

And yeah, the bashers are out there in droves.... not necessarily here, though. While their turntables have always been given high marks, the rest of their gear hasn't. I was a diehard and bought their gear in the 80's and 90's and I'll admit that some of it was less than stellar, but the same can be said of lots of companies of those periods. Never owned any of their speakers. I came across a floorstanding pair at the local GW over the holidays but didn't buy them, because I don't have the room to start collecting speakers I doubt would see much use.

Technics SA-1000a

I've made an album of 5 photos, but they don't do this receiver justice. I'll try to take better ones when Ihave time.

Black face equipment doesn't do much for me.

Silver-on-black, on the other hand, is a knockout!

Nice stack of equipment, Badger...real nice!

Beautiful piece Badger..... I'd love to own it! The pics are certainly good enough to serve a few purposes. They show that the old girl is in fine cosmetic shape and that there exists an SA-1000 adorned in black! While I'm sure its worth a mint, I can also understand why you haven't sold it :).
