First Look: The Legendary Concept 2QD

Nikko+Apt-Holman = OMG!

Mates beautifully with the Sansui G8000. Denizens of the Vintage pantheon like 2QD and G8000 have nothing to argue about, I guess.

Sounds Better than it Looks!

I was running a well-tuned and recently serviced Dual CS 508 with a new Stanton 680 EL II. It was a fairly precise but dry-sounding turntable. The 2QD - running a Stanton 681 EEE in good condition - has all the precision in reproduction but a much warmer sensibility, a bigger lower-middle, especially. Apart from a couple of double-takes to get the counter-weight in the right spot, set up was 5 minutes and the sound was glorious right out of the box. When time permits, I will take this into the stereo clinic to have it serviced.

But how does it sound?

Hey - I just bought a Concept 2QD tt as well. I will post comments
about sound when get the unit. It has a Stanton 500E MkII right now.
May change to an Ortofon OM10, not sure yet. I hear nice things about
the Stanton carts. Anyone have a manual for these tt's? Jon

i never realized these were so sought after......i passed one up not to long ago and now i wish i would have done more homework.... to be honest, i havent really consider a DD, but this looks like a solid contender

Dunno much about their collectibility. . . .

Though I have read here and there that they are pretty rare items. I doubt enough were made for them to develop any kind of reputation that would attract a collectors' following.

Actually, there is a Yahoo group for Concept gear at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/conceptaudio/
It is run by Chris (vintagestereo) a fellow AK'er.
Check it out. It's a small group but contains some
useful info about the various gear sold through
Pacific Stereo in the 70's and 80's. I think it is
more rare than collectable but I guess that makes it
collectable in itself. There is a nice example of a
Concept 2QD listed for sale over on www.audio.net
for $149 w/ cartridge. Grab it if it's still there. Jon

Actually, I bought that one. . .

But do patronize Audio.net. The fellow who runs that little storefront did an incredible job of packing this unit. You could have thrown it out of the International Space Station with no ill effect upon impact. Everything was completely immobilized, strapped down, padded and double boxed. Played wonderfully out of the box and continues to astound. Playing some Maynard Ferguson today and, wow, that double bass sounded just incredibly full and authoritative. I will play some full-bore orchestral stuff this week and report back on my findings.

I wondered if that was the one you got. Way to go, that one looked very
nice. The guy at Audio.net has some nice pieces. I usually keep my eyes
on his site. Jon

Concept 2QD has arrived!!!

I just got this via fedex. It was rather poorly packed and has a bunch
of tape glue residue on the dustcover and wood because the bonehead
who shipped it taped it directly to them! It all works and sounds very
very nice! It is in similar condition to what you got Pete. Maybe not
quite as good. I don't have any cracks on the dustcover, just some
small scratches and general wear. I think it will polish up well. The
Stanton 500 that came with it is not too bad. I think it is a dj or
broadcast grade cart. I would like to make a step up to something like
a Ortofon OM5E or OM 10. Maybe a Shure 97xE. We'll see. Bring back
the VINYL! I have over 800 lps that I haven't listened to in years. :D :thmbsp: Jon
