Brain teaser!

Okay, so it's time to challenge the wise among you with the exciting "Name that speaker" thread :D

I got these today and I know what they are but know absolutely nothing about them. Rather than say "who knows anything about the xxxxx speaker" I thought this might be more fun.

After a few responses (or basically when I log in) I will provide some clues if no one has guessed it. BRIAN can't guess because I told him what it is in a PM

No prizes unless I find something I think is worthy to give away. I'll look because maybe AK or an AK'er can benefit from our little fun.

Some helpful info:

Weight 70lbs each

Woofer 12"

Oh, I photo-shopped out the badge that would be at the bottom of the speaker centrally mounted. I made it obvious in the first image but not in the second.

Hmmm... Phillips lower mid, some 80's Bozak looking what appears to be aluminum coned upper mid, no-discerning-features whatsoever woofer and an oddball 4 bolt tweeter with only 3 screws to get to the voice coil.

Uhrm... huh. Almost looks Phase-Tech ish but without the flat styrofoam drivers and time aligned tweeter .. But in a 80's Pioneer cabinet.

My answer: I have no idea.

Okay.

So they are an East Coast speaker probably made in the late 80's or early 90's. There are examples of a smaller version but not a single mention of these.

There are at least two AK owners of the smaller version.

You shouldn't go far to identify the name of the manufacturer :D

"You shouldn't go far to identify the manufacturer"!

Now if that ain't a clue :D

Bozak is not correct but it isn't altogether incorrect.

I'm off to bed. I figure that the people who own the smaller version are so involved in listening to them that they don't get on the forum anymore

That's what I figured!

Anyone know anyone who used to work there? This can't be the only set, surely.

They sound tremendous by the way, just so clear and open. I may move them to the HT room to hear them with more than a 5W amp :)

Bozak DMS 5500

Here is a photo. Mine are not the nice oak, but vinyl walnut.

I heard from a former designer/engineer at NEAR that these are early design speakers, shortly after the Bozak demise.

He thinks they may be a bit busy in frequency overlap and that the improvements he introduced into the line would have made for a better speaker. That saying, he anticipates that the sound would be good and he is right.

I am trying to get more information via Bogen and Bill K. in particular.

Here's a few snaps of three of the four drivers. The second one down in the cabinet (see previous post for pictures) would unscrew but appears to be glued to the cabinet OR is just so tightly fit that it won't budge.

Spot the Bozak woofer :)

"Vifa soft dome tweeter, a metal cone tweeter from the Bozak days, a Bozak Pie Plate 6.5" woofer/midrange sort of thing, and the 12" wool/paper woofer" - quoting a former NEAR designer/engineer.
