Soundcraftsmen sp4002 phono stage thoughts

Hi Guys,

I am looking at picking up a SC sp4200 and am wondering if the phono stage would be an improvement over my Marantz Model 19's. I know it is more versatile with MM/MC capabilities, just wondering if the sound quality would be a step up?

Only your ears will tell you if it is to you. Proponents of both camps will no doubt weigh in saying one is the better choice over the other. The issue is they are not the ones listening to the stereo- you are. Ultimately no matter what- you are the final arbitter for yourself.

The reality is it is probably at worst a step sideways not factoring in the cartridge flexibility. If y ou can- give it a spin first with a piece of music you know well.

Thanks Trio,

You are of course correct. Giving it a test run could be problematic as it will require some doing to test it before I buy.

I really like the Model 19's phono section but the flexiblility of the sp4200 has me intrigued.

I have been searching for a manual for my SP4002 so I can fully understand how to use the phono section. I love the preamp paired with my MA5002 amp, but can't seem to locate a manual anywhere.

manuals are very hard to come by...

but, on the back of the unit should be some kinda instructions on how to use the different ohm settings.. switching them on or off from left to right...

find the correct load for your cartridge and turn that on, and the rest of them off... (would be my best guess)

SP4002 Phono Stage Instructions

Here is a .pdf the SP4002 Phono Stage Instructions scanned from the Owner's Manual.

The manual is actually a 13"x20" quarter folded coated cardboard sheet which is too big for my flatbed scanner and and I've never tried to scan it in bits and paste everything together so it is small enough to print out and still be legible.

EDIT: Somehow the upload reversed the black on white to white on black but it's still legible so I won't try to fix it. I also tried to save it as a .jpg but I couldn't get it small enough (in kb) to upload.

Thanks a bunch, just what I needed.
